I would really like to find a good smith that can thread my barrel without having to wait a few weeks. I am temped to take my AK brake off myself and just buy a tap.

Is there not a good, while I wait, semi close, not too expensive place to get a barrel threaded? I have a machining background so I know what it takes.

HELP!

Silly rabbit.  If you even think about using a tap, I'm beat you with the biggest stick I can find.  Don't come crying to me when you end up with baffle strikes.

Quality - Cost - Time

Pick two.

Go to Patriot Arms and pay the $100 and wait the couple weeks.  Have no worries.

Or...

Call David's Gun Room and ask for Rusty Kidd.  Tell him I sent ya.  See if he can do it faster for you.

Before I go, I must say I am SO glad to see you finally ditch that stupid brake.  I still remember the days of having to stand by you at CE and listen to that damn thing.  Gives me shivers just thinking about it.

Like the saying goes.

Good, Quick, Cheap-pick 2 as you often won't get all 3.

ETA: Mark beat me to it....

I really prefer Jered as he does an excellent job with anything he gets his hands on and is one of a very few people that I'll let work on my precision rifles.

I've had work done by Rusty also on some other projects and have zero complaints with him.....

Dude, we ARE helping you.

Just because you don't like the answers doesn't mean we are giving you the wrong answer.  Now, call Rusty or Jered before I have Bradd_D and ARH come reenact a certain scene from Deliverance.  I bet chainshaw would want in on that action too.

I know someone in Toccoa that does very nice work. Though he may not be quick.

If you're not in a hurry, I highly recommend Jered at Patriot.

are you putting a suppressor on an AK?  if so don't they make those quick disconnects that fit the threads that are on the AK?

if not that sucks, that is what I was planning on doing.

No, he is using a can on an AR that currently has a loud AK brake on it.

The problem with suppressors on AKs is that often the threads are not concentric to the bore.  Also, AKs are kinda loud even with cans.  They just don't suppress as well.

yea I have heard that, plus the top cover has alot of blow back I have also heard.

my thoughts are that my AR shoot 7.62x39 and my rifle I am building is also .308.  I have several AKs so since the can would work the caliber why not get an adapter that will take it,  but it sounds like the threading might be a whole other issue.

I have the super whiz-bang drawings now to match up threading jobs to...but alas I am spending all of June making a cannon for the boss...sorry.

The Firing Lane in Athens. Its an indoor shooting range and the owner is a machinist. He has threaded my AR, 1911, and my savage 22. He does great work for around $75. Ive never had to wait more than a week. His name is Jeff.

Sounds like I need to break out the CETME for a few mag dumps.

Random day at CE:

pop
pop
pop
I load and make ready my CETME
BOOM
BOOM
BOOM
BOOM
BOOM
BOOM
BOOM
BOOM!!!!!!!!

(in unison)   Delta you ASSHOLE!!!!!!!

I can't do any shooting right now though.  I have a bum shoulder right now, and even picking up an empty rifle right now makes me see stars from the pain.
