I have a new Dell laptop with the windows vista home premium operating system. I don't know if its premium or not that is what the paperwork says. Anyway, I have some memory sticks that will not play when I put them in the usb ports. It tells me that it is missing some codecs. I downloaded the divx program, but I am still having the same problem. I also have a camcorder that I cannot use with this laptop due to no driver program available. I contacted Sony and they do have some sort of program that I can download, but the only problem with that is I need the disc that came with the camcorder that I no longer have. I need it to enter some drive numbers that are on the disc, and of course the disc to go into the disc drive. WTF!!! If I can just get my memory sticks to work with whatever codec I need to downlaod that would be great. I may can handle the camcorder business later. If you anyone can help please do so. Until I get my camcorder to communicate with my laptop, I will be unable to show the demise of my old desktop to the GA HTF.

Download the Gordian Knot codec pack and install. It should have every codec you need, and then some. There is another codec pack, but I cannot remember the name at this moment. I am not at my desk right now, but I can find it once I am out of my meeting.

Not sure about the camcorder disc problems without more info.

OK I downloaded Gordian and still tells me that I need an audio codec to play the file. It also displays something about inserting the last copy of a multi volume set????

Ok, I assumed you were talking about video...

Let's try this. What type of file are you trying to play? You mentioned divx, did you create them as divx?

Will the laptop play a DVD? Some xp/vista versions need a DVD prog to play and those will include codecs also.

If you have a new dell, you should call dell they have fantastic customer service, and you probably paid for it the price of the computer. They will hook you up, also you should be able to do a search for "Sony (enter camera model here) drivers" or cd, or look on the sony website to get the needed camera disk stuff.

Byte taught Dell everything they know. I'd stick with Byte, he's less likely to put you on hold and talks faster and hasn't be outsourced to India or Alabama (yet).

Yes Byte has helped me immensely. I still had to call Dell though. Sony is a dead end on my camcorder without the disc that came with it. I can't find it anywhere.

How long has it been since you called Dell customer service??  Used to be you'd get an American and good help, now you get some friggin idiot in india.  They are really worthless for help unless you go to the support forums, then it people like you and me helping each other and thats how my problems were solved.  Don't buy a Dell for customer service.  My dell tech's anwer to my problem was "go to Run, msconfig, startup and hit disable all, that should take care of it"  yea right.

Tennesse how was your experience with dell, any help?  Look on support forums and ask the same question and you will get better answers.

What kind of camcorder is it, I can make you a copy of my sony disc, it may work for you.

Hell yeah I would really appreaciate that. It is a Sony DCR-TRV280. I also have to have the driver numbers off of the disc. When I go to Sony's site I can get all the way to the download and then it ask for the model numbers serial numbers and the disc driver numbers. After that I have to put the disc in the disc drive. I have tried everyway imaginable.

I believe your camera has a firewire port, if so it should work with no problem transfering video to the computer.

Fire Wire???

Firewire(IEEE1394 - i.Link) is like USB but faster, your laptop may have it but it may not. It is the way DV camcorders usually connect to download the video.

I'll be mailing out the disc for your camera tomorrow.  If it doesn't work, try the firewire cable, you'll need a 6 pin to 4 pin wire, (just look and the ports and get a cable to fit.)  Check walmart then best buy or circuit city.

The port in the middle is the firewire port for the camera you said you had.

Yes my camera looks exactly like this one and my laptop does have a port as well. I will look for a firewire if the disc you are sending doesn't work. Thanks for all the help and support. I have been able to make the thumb drives work.

Screw buying a firewire cable from walmart, bestbuy, etc hell screw buying ANY cables from a retail store.  The markup on cables is insane, if you can wait a couple days buy all your cables from either www.firefold.com or www.monoprice.com

Oh and please don't believe the Monster cable hype, Monster cables are nothing more than marketing hype.

Wow, awesome prices on cables!!  I checked out the first site you listed and the only thing they had in stock close to what he needed was a 10 foot cable, but for $4, you can't beat it.  I think I paid $24 including tax for my 6 foot cable.  www.firefold.com/Categories/FireWire-Products/FireWire-Cables/4pin-6pin-Cables.aspx

The second website has what you need Tennessee for $2.13 if the disc doesn't work.  Might want to order it anyway at that price. www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030102&p_id=2665&seq=1&format=2

Yes I did get the gay porn off of the dives. I was really wanting to get the home movie you and I made together off of it, so I could sit back and watch it and remember how you made me feel that long hot day.  It just gets me all worked up and excited just to think about it. I may have to make a trip to north Ga. Is that cabin still available??

If you are trying to watch video just go to videolan.org and download Vlc player it will play just about any video format with no need for codec packs.
