I know Gwinnett PD is hiring like crazy anymore, it's not a bad place to work and you get more training than a lot of other places. We also have our own academy and will get you POST certified. As Jace said in your other thread, a lot of Departments could care less about your paper diploma and care more about what practical experience you have as it applies to being an Officer. I'll tell you now, that most all recruits anymore for the Gwinnett County PD have either Military and combat experience-or at least a 2yr degree. Yes, all that is required is a high school diploma-but I don't know anybody who's been hired in the past 8yrs or so without 1 of the 2 things mentioned above. He's also right in that when it comes to what you earn in LEO-the finances will never seem to add up, but you can make it work. I got married as an LEO and have a house, so I managed to do all that you want without maintaining any debt other than the house. Part time jobs are plentiful and pay pretty damned good for a few hours of your time, so it's all about saving the pennies. |
| thanks. I think i am going to knock out a stint in the military and then get back to the job hunt. I just want to have a leg up when it comes interview time. Sitting next to some hardass marine who has done 3 tours of duty and worked at a sheriffs office for 2 years makes me look like a puss with my diploma. Ohwell sandbox here i come |

I know Macon PD and Bibb County Sheriff's Office is hiring. Good experience to be had here. Do your 2 years and move on to better paying agencies. ETA: I worked for Macon PD for 6 years. Can give you pointers and help in the application process too. You would start at a slightly higher pay grade too with your college degree. Main thing is passing PT and assessment center. Then there's a psychological and polygraph too (nothing to sweat about). If you are serious about applying, feel free to IM or email me. |
| Well I live in Valdosta GA, Not the biggest city in the world i know. I have been thinking about Cobb or maybe APD but i think i have been convinced to do the military thing by some of the e-mails i have recieved. When i get back from basic (if i don't get deployed in Jan with the rest of them) I will be applying at larger depts. |

I went to a GACE college-to-career expo last week looking for internships for accounting/finance. i always stop by the LEOs and military for the hell of it, and every time i passed by the recruiter for cherokee county, he kept saying to drop the business and be with him... and the roswell pd guy as well. so my .02, you should have looked for an internship before you grad, thats what im looking for. or go to job fairs and such, i never miss one. |
well i did, but my GPA sucks due to my 2 freshman years . I have busted my ass getting it where it is. Ohwell i'm going to graduate, at least i didn't quit. o you should try out the IRS special agent thing. last expo i talked to him for a while but you need to have 15 hours in accounting so im out. (then again you could always be a CPA and make loads of cash) |

lol my freshman and soph year i had a LOT of fun, so my gpa wasnt so hot, now the past 2 years ive probably only made 4 Bs and the rest all A's so its good. my major gpa is like a 3.76ish. the IRS was at the GACE and i talked to her for a good min. and the funny thing is, the gace was on tue 4-8, and im in professional seminar (a class where accountants from corp america come and talk) which is on wednesdays. the same recruiter came in the next day and i talked to her more. my professor was impressed with my networking Im thinking about getting my CPA and CFO since im getting two degrees in accounting and finance, SIX figures baby!!! lol then me and dking can go shopping together and buy more $900 suits

Guys i really appreciate all of the information. Also thank you to all of you that have sent me e-mails and IM's offering help and put me in touch with people. As it stands right now i have been talking to alot of LEO's and my family, and have decided to join the national guard. Hopefully this will give me some much needed experience, financial stability, and a little additional time to find the right agency. I will try to keep those of you who cared updated on what i finally do and when. Thanks again for all the help. |
