First I want to start out with full disclosure.

1. I do not have an AUG on pawn at the store.

2. I do not have one for sale at the store.

3. I do not have one in the back room that's not for sale.

4. I do not have one in my personal collection.

5. I have never owner an AUG.

6. I'm am in the market for a Pre-Ban Steyr Aug.

I know the AUG was imported in two different colors which are green and black.

Now for my question.

Which color is the rarer of the two? Which color is the most desirable?

If I remeber right the black stocks are more desireable due to their ablility to accept ar15/m16 mags.  I know that if I was in the market for one that would be what I wanted anyways.  The green are pretty cool though.  You should know that there is a rumor that has been going around that Styer will open a plant in america to produce the AUG.  Many say that it is just a rumor though.  I would research a bit.

OK, that's what I needed.

The color matters little, but I do like the idea of using AR mags.

I've also heard rumors about a Steyr US plant but I prefer the pre-ban.

Thx

Not my Ad.

I just happened to notice this Ad today for a Pre-Ban AUG. I know nothing about AUG's so I don't even know if this is a fair price or not. Here ya go:

That is pretty high unless the price has gone up on them by around $1000 over gunshow ticket price.  But then again I didn't look at the add so I don't know what accessories it comes with.

I think that price is in line with other AUGs I've seen.

Unless it just has to be a Steyr, a buddy just bought one of the Microtech guns and it looked VERY nice.  A few improvements over the Steyr guns too.  He bought the complete kit with hard case, four mags, etc. for just under $2000.  You can remove the 1.5 optic if you want and replace with a rail to mount your own optic.  Has adjustable gas system, etc.  It looked like a quality system.

I'm no AUG expert, but the first 3 digits of the serial number relates to it's series. I think they started as 900 and then incremented up through the 907 number. The green stocked ones were up through the early 906 series. There were very few green stocked ones in the 906 series. Generally, the black stocked ones started in the 907 series. I've heard of only one factory black 906 series rifle. There was a NATO "kit" which consisted of a black stock, which accepted AR15 mags, the black foregrip, hammer pack, stock pin and black buttpad. This kit could be used for any AUG series.
Generally, the later series- 905, 906, 907 are more desireable because they came with factory upgrades and improvements.

Hope this helps.

I would recomend staying away from the Microtech AUGs.  They use very few parts that interchange with the Styer and they will not even take AUG mags.  Microtech makes one of the best out the frint auto knives though.

Will the Microtech guns work with a Qualified trigger pack?

I'm also in the market for a pack.

Black AUG's may not be rarer but generally commanded a higher price than green AUGs.  The black AUGs do NOT take M16 mags.  As another user pointed out there is a NATO STANAG compatibile stock which CDNN sells that will allow use of M16 mags.  I believe it also has some additional parts.

Pre-89 AUG's are all going to be A1's which from an operator standpoint is the least desirable.  With the A1 you're pretty much stuck with the integrated Steyr Optic.  The A2 receivers like on the post-ban USR will accept any optic that mounts to a std. milspec rail and they have some internal upgrades that A1's were in need of.  The stocks can be changed out so that's not much of an issue.  There were also some receivers imported that were made by ADI, the Aussie company that makes the FR88 that are A2 format as well.  They were not imported as complete guns so anyone that you find is either going to be stripped or built up from a kit.

Not sure.  I did speak with Microtech this morning and shot one of their head technicians an e-mail this morning.  I'm waiting to hear back.  I'll ask about the trigger packs.

muddy, are AUG parts hard to find?  What are your thoughts on the MSAR guns as an alternative?

AUG parts are out there but they aren't cheap.  They also seem to show up in spurts so you have to kind of buy whatever you think you may want when it pops up.  I don't have any experience with the MSAR guns but the consensus from posts seems to be that it's a) an AUG-like gun but not an AUG because there is little that is interchangeable and b) it's got some growing pains to get through.  Pete from PJS, who was pretty much the god of all things AUG, left the MSAR project some time ago.  A lot of knowledge left with it.  It looks to be a cool gun in its own right but if I was spending the money I would want something with a degree of parts interchangibility.  There's another company doing an AUG copy.  Their site is here:  www.tpdusa.com/proddetail.php?prod=AXRRifle

I have no idea what there quality is like but it is supposed to have parts interchangibility with the AUG A2.  Steyr is claiming that they may be selling AUG A3s on the civie market by summer.  I'm not holding my breath but that would be the cat's ass.

Depending on price.
