I should be there around 10, 1030 at the latest. The weather is looking better. Hopefully there won't be a crowd. There's been some interesting reading about Wilson Shoals on Silencer Talk lately. Anyone that goes there and is into NFA should have a look at those threads.

Don't forget to print out the regs I posted if you go with an NFA item.

Just got back from Wilson Shoals WMA outdoor range. I was excited like I always get when I prepare to shoot outdoors. I unload all my rifles and pistols. Load my Mac10 SMG and start to blast........suddenly I hear stop! Box her up no Class III items. I look over at the rules chart and sure enough. No machine guns.....No .50.....then I see no silencers. Now the guy that ran the range was pretty cool. But I had to scratch my head cause the No on SMG I can understand, no on the .50 BMG I can understand, but what the hell on No on silencers. Could not shoot my 9mm, .308, .45, .22, .223..........NOISE POLLUTION?????????????? The cpapiest part was that I drove over an hour from my house.

Just wanted to rant.

i visited Wilson Shoals this paast weekend. I was not allowed to shoot my FA nor my silenced weapons. I shoot a little of what I can shoot. I am with my brother. Today around 1 pm, i get a call from my brother saying the ATF is looking for me at his place of biz. I rush back to the shop and speak to the ATF agents. They tell me that I was reported to have illegal weapons and needed my papers. Thank god I hasd my papers with me or no telling what they would have done with me. A ride downtown maybe. They tell me that it was not the RO but a fellow shooter there had called the local sheriff to say a guy was shooting illegal firearms.........NOW WHAT THE FUCK.........Do people really beleive that someone is stupid enough that in front of at least 20 people pull out an illegal item and use it and then stand around for about another 30 minutes while his brother finished shooting. Dumb fucks should do some research before wasting tax payers money. They should have asked the RO. Then the Ro could have asked for my papers. People without common sense bug the crap out of me. I know waht really happended. Here is what was said........Yo dude check this out I am going to get htose guys into trouble.......etc..etc......I think I saw the guys who thought it was funny to make the call........enough said.

FWIW, one of the range officers told me that on Saturdays (particularly nice ones) it tends to be packed after about 11 am.  I have never been there on a weekend, so haven't seen for myself, and I'm booked tomorrow in any case.

At least the berms should be nice and soft for staking targets... at the back berm the mud will be bad.

I used to shoot their quite a bit. Didn't know they had offical range officers now. The place had gotten kind of scarry and I quit going. Literally have had guns pointed at me while down range. Fair Weather Saturdays used to have a waiting line. Have fun out there, but be careful.

I was there last week. It was safe, clean and well run. IMHO

I searched for that thread and can't find it.

I am tempted to go there with my cans and when the dumbfuck says something I will hand him the paper with his boss's name and phone number and tell him to give him a call.

I can't find the thread, but there was one that this was hashed out in and some calls were made and it was determined that the law contains an exemption if you have done all the NFA song and dance.

I quite going for the same reason, atleast going by myself. 5 or 6 years ago I had a guy try to rob me at the shooting range. Long story short, he pulled a knife ( at a gun range) and wanted my money, an 8mm round went into the ground by his feet, and he left quickly.

I was dumb and scared to call the cops cause I didn't want to get into trouble for doing something wrong. At the time I didn't now crap about shootings and didn't know if I should have shot or not.

Looking back, if it happened again, lots of things would have been different, just about the whole situation would change.

FWIW - went to W.S. from mid-morning until about 1230 hrs today. Nothing but nice folks there, including jmarkma who was shooting some good groups with his AR. The range officer was a nice older gentleman, I didn't get his name :(
Eye n ears, weapons open & unloaded & benched & untouched when the range was cold, weapons checked upon arrival (unloaded?), etc. were all politely enforced.  I was running a new bipod temporarily attached to a railed gas block, got some wandering groups and was blaming that setup, after I got home I discovered that jmarkma was right and my RRA scope mount knobs were a bit loose (duh!). Except for the mud and the fact that the back berm is only 80 yds it was good.

Nobody died. I say you did good. I wouldn't involve the cops either.

+1

One of the ROs at Wilson Shoals told me they'd only been staffed for about 7 months.  I wouldn't have gone there before because of the potential for things like this and accidents from... careless fellow shooting enthusiasts.

It was nice meeting you! I am glad it was only some loose mounts but your groups earlier in the day were pretty darn good. Now you need to go back and shoot some more!

I found I am very rusty shooting my handguns, really need to practice some more. The RO was a nice fellow and a needed addition to the range. If anyone goes keep in mind that if you want to fire less than 25 yards, a staked target on the 25 yard berm is fine,  you need a target stand at least 48" tall or higher.

Good to meet you too! I've got to clean that 22 AR today, no more PMC wax coated bullets for it. I'm probably going to put a free float rail on the other rifle and be done with it.

You'll have to come down to ARC sometime and shoot some steel.
