Whats the best place to go out here and get an Ak-47 at a cheap price. We cant carry them at work so it'll only be fore range and home defense. I seen the WASR looks pretty good. i just dont know where there is a rifle range around her either!(Gwinnett by the way)

its certainly not pannels... thats for sure. i stopped by there the otherday, they are so overpriced... 20 bucks for chicom mags, 579 for a busted century yugo, 250 per case of wolf 7.62... i about cried and slapped them all at the same time. check out the gun shows for the rifle, stick to buying your ammo online.

why not build one? I have less than $200 is my RomyG kit, and around $220 is my yugo underfoler. still having a few issues on the underfolder but the romyG is better than any I have found in the local gun shops.  (gotta brag a little)

you can build it on an 80% reciever that you don't need an FFL to get sent to you, or you can buy a 100% reciever and just reassemble it.  it's real easy.

Best thing to do is either build one like said above or if buiding is not an option, buy online.  Not gonna find a good price localy.

gee mine doesn't have mag dimples and mine fits double stacks mags.  of course it's probably because I just didn't put them in there.

ACmechanic:  no issues except the rails I bought were made to short.  I had to reweld the extractor and reshape it.  no biggie.

MAC90 is one of the best of the old affordable chicom ones.
Arsenal's are not too bad either.

Gee these dont have dimples....

But your not gonna find many VEPRs around. But the saigas dont have em and they are top notch rifles also. I would buy a saiga and convert it before I bought money for an arsenal in the same class, By class I mean stamped, and of the same caliber. And youll probably still come out better on the cost factor if you buy the saiga and convert it yourself, youll have extra scratch for mags or ammo.

Ed's had Yugo underfolders for either $459 or $479, can't remember. Either way, it was a good price. You should call them and ask.

jj, don't buy a WASR. If $450 is in your budget, watch the EE. You can probably find a Vector or nice MAK90 for less, and either are FAR superior to a WASR.

ETA Atlantic Firearms has wood or synthetic full stock Vectors for $499.

Well, if $450 is too high, good luck. The difference in quality between your average $350 AK (usually a WASR) and a $400-$450 AK (MAK 90, Vector, etc.) can be dramatic. IMO if you can't afford the extra $100, how do you plan on buying mags and ammo?

One of my friends picked this AK variant up and its a nice shooter. The bolt was extra shiny with chrome.  With a decent transfer fee, you should by on budget.

Anyone else buys one of these?

I got one.  It's not a bad AK.  It is a Century product and you need to check it close.  I have heard about canted front sites on them.  The only thing I have noticed about mine is that the top cover is not fitted very well, it allows it to move maybe 1/16" front to back but hell its an AK.  When extended the stock locks up tight and does not have any side play.  I have a custom built PMKMS and I would compare the two, though the Yugo under-folder is much heavier.

Dimples or no Dimples?

Chicoms had dimples as part of the receiver design based on the Russian model for strength. Saigas and some others use a thicker receiver that does not need dimpes but remember some were first designed as single stack receivers - you have to look at the history of the design starting back in the late 1940's.

The Yugo models are build with a USA barrel, receiver and other parts - I have heard good things about them - if they are build right by Century. Vectors are also good.
Just look at the magwell on what you want to buy - if it looks hand machined - walk away.

I've got the 12ton press, the rivet jig and a triggerguard jig, 2 Bulgy AK74 kits and an AMD65 kit. I may be interested in hosting a build party at the house, but need to check to ensure that I still have all the parts for the jigs.

I bought the kits and everything else a couple of years ago with the intentions of building everything, but never got around to it.

I just finished 2 bulgy aks74 kits, and I used one aks74 sidefolder flat.  I traced the cutouts onto a second and third flat and I used the second flat for my second build.  I have a tapco flat with "no" trunnion holes predrilled that your welcome to if you want it.  All you have to do is cut on the dotted line if your building a sidefolding aks.  If I'm off, I might be able to drop by and give a hand, I just built the last kit I want to build for a while (an excellent condition yugo underfolder)  so I won't have anything of my own to build.

I've got one AK74 kit and one AKS74 kit and I'd like to get them both built. The perfect scenario would be to build them on 80% receivers or flats as then (I think), they'd appear the most militarily correct since military AK's have the serial number on the front trunnion and not the sheet metal receiver.

The biggest thing is access to something to bend the flat and weld/secure the rails in place. How did you go about preparing the flat for use? Does it have the dimples for the magwell in place?
I think if we were to go forward with a build party, I'd be inclined to wait until you can make it since you are the one with the experience and can provide some guidance
4/16/2007 5:21:44 PM EDT
[#28]
both of mine are home built so I am not sure on the laws for selling them.  I don't think I can with out putting a serial number on them.

one suggestion though, if you don't have access to a jig and a press to bend them with you might want to consider a prebent with no holes.  I just build a yugo on a prebuilt.  it did take longer then the 80% flat but it was much more fulfilling to build it that way plus the holes were much better lined up that way.

the railes are the only thing left and they are really simple.  if you don't have a welder and are near Marietta just let me know, I would be happy to help you weld those in.  it's really simple.

here are the first two I worked on.  top one id mine, lower is a friends.

no pics of the underfolder yet

I always use flats except for the yugo build I just did, I used a Coldsteel shell that needed to be cut out.

If I were you I'd also put scope rails on those bulgy's.  I put an Ohiorapidfire siderail one, and the other I bought from a guy on ebay and it hasn't gotten here yet.  I still need to finish the guns and I plan to park the bulgy's and use brownells teflon moly over top.

I made a flat bending jig that a number of guys here have used at my house, and it makes perfect receivers.  One thing I did notice is that when I build a romy I use a letter C drill bit to set space for the lower rail and when I built the bulgy's I needed to use a D bit to properly set the space.  To attach the lower rails, I drill #21 holes into the receiver where the spotwelds would be (I do this before heat treating the fcg holes)  then I use my mig to plug weld the rails on.  A spot welder that is setup would make things a lot quicker.

Here are my build tools

parts need:
1 - a parts kit (Duh) RomyG $125
2 - reciever, 50% prebent $40, or an 80% flat $15
3 - compliance parts, (5 of them) easiest combination is a G2 Fire control group $32, pistol grip $10, muzzle break $10.
4 - screw kit www.screwkits.net $5

this is of course the cheapest way I know how to do it.  there are much better/more expensive ways of doing it.  the romyg kit is a really good one, I really like mine.
