Ive had an Old Colt 45 in the closet for years. I was showing it to a friend and we got to talking about when it was made. I tried to research the numbers but there appears to be a gap and I cant quite figure it out. Is there any one here that collects old Colts and could give me a hand? Its a goverment model and is stamp United States Property. The serial number ( or atleast most of it) is 1179##. I think its made in 1918 but Im not sure. Thanks for any help.

Google is a good thing.

Looks like it was made by Springfield

How common is it to have a Springfield Lower on a Colt Slide?

It could be quite common.
When a gun went in for rebuild,I'm not sure if the slides and frames were kept together as a rule or not.
If the slide was damaged,it would have been replaced with whatever was spare, regardless of man'f.

My Springfield 1911 is in the correct serial number range for slide and frame(first run in 1914),but I haven't checked the rest of the parts to see if they match or not.

Keep your eye open on eBay for a slide that matches(after you wade through all the current SA parts),and you could increase the value quite a bit,and keep the Colt slide for another project,or sell it for cash to offest some of the cost of the Springfeild silde.
