Congrats! You'll love it. I predict that within the next 60 days you'll be ordering another can. Just a prediction. It only took me 9 days to order my second one after the first one came in. I told my wife, the sonic crack is just too loud for the neighbors. I need a 9mm can so I can shoot subsonic ammo. She looked at me like I was full of shit (which I was). I then whipped out a Ben Franklin and said, "Don't you agree that I need a 9mm can?" It's amazing what ol' Benjamin can do for you in the persuasive category. |
If you don't already have a threaded barrel, why not get a 9mm conversion barrel that is threaded and get an Evo 9. That way you can go "Hollywood quiet" with a sweet gun. When my Evo 9 comes in, you're welcome to shoot it on my Sig P226R Blackwater. I've heard the 40's are a lot louder and I don't know of anything other than handloads which are subsonic in 40. |
The 180grn Winchester jacketed flat-nose practice rounds [WWB] (can be found at some Wal-Mart stores in 100 rd. value packs among other places) is a decent value at seems to be readily available. From what little research I have done, most of the 180grn 40S&W has a muzzle velocity of between 920fps-990fps, with the 165grn and lighter stuff going past 1100 (roughly supersonic, dependening on altitude, humidity, and temp.) Would this stuff not be considered subsonic? Am I missing some key factor here? Please enlighten me, as my next suppressor decision will be based off of this and if you are indeed correct, I'll need to look at something different. I want something pretty quiet - no sonic snaps or cracks. I haven't researched it, but I think I remember the P229 being offered in 40, 9mm, and 357. I'm gonna need to get a threaded barrel from Jarvis or KKM or someplace anyhow, even if I stay with the .40. |
| Ex-para- you're right about the Wally world White box 180's. They're subsonic. The P229 is available in all three calibers, but the 9mm isn't the same pistol as the 357/40. Some of those companies, and BarSto make 9mm barrels for the 357/40 frame. The 9mm 229 is bascially a milled stainless slide 228, whereas the 228 is a stamped, folded slide. The 9/229 uses the same mags as the 228. The 228 mags will work in the 357/40 229 when using the 9mm conversion barrel. It works fine on all accounts I've read, but most everyone with one says its for the range only. And I believe the 228 mags are a little loose in the frame. |

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound 761 mph. x 5280 ft./ mile = 4,018,080 feet per hour x 1 hour / 3600 seconds = 1116.13 fps [feet per second] Dang, I didn't know 'subsonic' was that fast. I thought it was more like 900-1000 fps. I wonder if 1000 to 1100 fps is what sounds 'trans-sonic'. Anybody know fer sure? p.s. look at today's 'featured article' on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page too funny. I guess eGay / Payscrew hasn't bought Wiki yet. p.p.s Even better yet: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AKAnimation.gif |

To check speed of sound, I use this-it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to compute everything yourself. |
Very cool. Thanks for the link! |
