9:00 till 11:00 Be there !! rj |

That same type of stuff happened last time I was up there. There was a bunch of kids (16-20 years old) shooting everything they had. Shotguns, pistol in each hand, etc... I think I was in and out of that place in about 10 minutes. I didn't even finish shooting a full clip thru my AR. I hated wasting the gas but I was still alive when I left. LAst time I was there a guy (30-40) set up a cardboard box with a target about 10 feet away. He was shooting a revolver. It was so close he was shooting at about a 30-40 degree angle. I was there long enough to sight in my rifle and chit chat with a guy about suppressors and I left. Wilson Shoals is up I985N/365, past Hwy 52 about 5-7 miles. Take a right on Mud Creek Road at a gas station. Go to the end of the road and you'll be on Old Cornelia Hwy. Take a left and an immediate right and head about 2.5 miles. WS is on the left. Case the place out before bothering to get your stuff out of the truck. Interestingly, the same last time I was there, ther was a nice looking girl from NYC with her boyfriend and her dad. Apparently the girl and guy were down visiting. She was giving them firearms instruction- or at least to the boyfriend. She came across pretty compentent. Had a thumbhole AK, and CAR15 and a few pistol. I usually only talk to the older folks there. Too many young weirdos come through. One of my favorites was when I went with a buddy and we had an HK91 and a Mossy 590 and a bunch of 3" shells and slugs. These kids show up (16-18) and they have a .22. I see none of them have hearing protection and I advise them they'll need it. They said they'd be alright, so I loaded up a number of 000 3" shells and let lose of them consecutively. My buddy picked up my 91 and started nailing dirt clods. They all left and were out in the parking lot looking for crap to stick in their ears. |
Week days are the best ... always benches open and NO range officer. The last time I went and he was there he was questioning my Colt because it was stamped LEO and then he tells me I'm crazy for shooting Wolf steel case because it's gonna ruin my rifle. And don't get trigger happy because he'll be over telling you to SLOW DOWN! We went up there Memorial Day ... was hot but only a few benches being used ... and even better ... the Gas station on the corner had gas for like 25 cents cheaper than any other place around!

He's a volunteer RO. You know you're in for a time when you pull up and his Mercury faux police cruiser has DNR and FBI hats in the back window. He'll tell you how a simple finger on the barrel can improve your groups- that's a little trick he taught the Navy SeAL snipers in Vietnam. Or he might reveal his skill with an 870 if he can figure out how to work the slide. If you're real lucky, he'll demo his skill with your AK by dumping your last mag of ammo on some kids balloon targets. |
Balloon's, god forbid I thought only paper targets were allowed. Last time I was there a fella with a Polytech AK with one 40rnd mag, a CAR with one 30rnd mag, a Ruger MK II that was threaded for a suppressor with a thread protector and no front sight showed up. He proceeded to do mag dumps into the first berm not really aiming at anything. He came over asking about what I had and we talked a bit. He finally left me alone when he started telling me about the Russian Dragonov's in SGN for $599. I responded oh you mean the Romak's there not really Druganov's but they still are neat guns. I about started laughing when I was packing up and he saw my target from the far berm. It was nothing special, I had been shooting wolf out of my AR but most of the center of the target was missing and he just gave this odd look when I passed by like you think you are so great
|
HEY! THAT WAS ME JERK! I can't see so good, so the close berm is as far as I can hit, and I was shooting a dirt clods. I hit them all too! Just kidding! It wasn't me! I was just thinking last night that it's only a matter of time before someone gets offended when they unknowingly shoot next to another Arfcomer and get "critiqued" for their shooting style. |

funniest thing I've seen this guy do, is two young guys came up there- maybe 18. They had an 870 with them, and it was nearing the start of turkey season. They had ONE turkey target and placed it out about 30 yards. I'm next to them and stop to watch when the RO comes over. I'm figuring they're wanting to pattern the shotgun. He started giving them instructions on how to shoot a shotgun. He gets down in a tactical squat of sorts- and he can't work the action. He startes struggling with it and the two boys are jsut looking at each other like WTF!. Finally he chambers a round after one of the kids shows him the slide release. He squats back down a bit and blasts a few shells in to their target. tells them "that's how it's done". The kids just look at each other again and start packing their stuff up. I felt bad for them. |
Actually I already knew that wasn't you. I was at the supressor shoot but didn't know who you were till Mark told me.

I have only been there about 3 times and with some luck haven't me the RO. I have since built my own 100yd range in the backyard so I don't need to go there unless I wan't to shoot from a bench. |
Well...he is actually part of the problem. I feel safer when he isn't there. Then it's just me, skeeter, and bubba. See skeeter and bubba are idiots...but they are predictable idiots. The RO/Seal/Sniper/FBI agent isn't predictable at all. You never know what that crazy fuker is going to do. |
I agree 100%, and it's getting worse out there. When I started going a few years ago, it was pretty good. It has gotten progressively worse, and the RO from the gunshows is definately part of the problem. He tends to make up his own rules, and not really enforce the ones that matter. Just in the last 5 or 6 times I've been, I've had some idiot sweep all the benches next to him with his Beretta, finger on the tirgger, cocked and loaded. I let him know as nicely as i could that he was a complete maroon and was endangering everyone around him. Twice in the last 2 times I've had guys pop in mags and chamber rounds while me and others were still in the target area. The last time I was out, the RO stops everyone and gives about a 10 minute speech about his rules and his credentials. He even said something about 1 round every 5 seconds or some BS like that. That is nowhere on the printed rules. I still had my ears on and was doing my best to finish cleaning up my brass and get the hell outta there before he wanted to start "training" me right on the spot. It's a real bummer because this is the best place for me to shoot outdoors. Going during the week, early, is definately the best time. I'm off the week of July 4th and plan to go at least twice. |
. I shoot the 10 rounds through the sks with the Tech Sights , go to the truck and get out a cased AR, bring it to my bench, set it on the bags, pop in a mag, settle in on the bench and just as I am about to release the bolt catch and finalize my sight picture I see movement on the range in my peripheral vision

Whose up ???
