Hey Fellas,

Do you guys have any suggestions for a trip to Savannah.  My fiancee wants to go to Savannah and I've been a slacker in planning our honeymoon.  Do you know any places that we need to visit or any to avoid?  We do need a hotel for about a week also.

Any good gunshops down there?

How much do you want to spend?

As far as the hotel, we usually stay around $100-$150 per night.  I've never been to Savannah either.  Is it best to stay in the downtown area?  I was looking at the Holiday Inn-Mulberry on East Baystreet.  If you know any restaurants that are good that would be appreciated also.

Thanks!

I think its great that your coming to Savannah. Congrats on the marriage.  One of the things to keep in mind about Savannah is that the really nice parts of town often border some of the seedy parts of town.  That hotel, if i am coorect, is ner the corner of bay street and east broad and that corner is very nice, bur 2 blocks south is a project for the urban poor.

Hampton Inn on Bay street is more in the middle of  the nice section of downtown, but it costs a little more (175).  Other possible choices are Hilton Savannah DeSoto, 15 East Liberty Street Savannah, GA 31401 or maybe even Savannah Inn at Ellis Square Historic District, 201 West Bay Stree.  Otherwise its 200+ night places in the bigger downtown hotels like the hyatt, westin, marshall house , or the Mansion on Forsyth Park.

Having said that some of myfavorite restaurants are:
Lady and Sons: good ol southern food and the owner is famous. corner  of whitaker and congress.
Elizabeth on 37th:  southern fine dining (don't walk from downtown to 37th).
Il Pasticio: fine italian on Broughton street
Sushi Zen:  nice sushi  near Whitake and Congress
Express Cafe: neat the corner of jefferson and broughton
Griffin Tea House:  nice girlie place for your wife (on Bull, i think).

Toward or on Tybee Island (the beach).
Crab Shack: great atmosphere and basic low country seafood.
Georges: fine dining on Tybee. on route 80 just after getting on the Tybee Island
Northbeach grill:  on the north beach  great lunch food, really creative spot.

The restaurants on River Street have a great view, but are often pricey for what you get.

I hate Savannah!!!!

It's an overpriced ghetto as far as I'm concerned.

I consider an obstacle when I'm going to visit Mother on Tybee.

Since I got that off my chest some people really enjoy the city and atmosphere. It's much to touristy for my taste but Tybee is as well. When I visit Mother I rarely step foot in any of the shops unless my little girl drags me kicking and screaming. I spend the majority of my time fishing offshore. There's not much to do on Tybee or in Svannah unless you like the beach or shoping.

How long can a real man shop or hang out on the beach?

I thoroughly enjoy Savannah, as does my wife.

The Days Inn on Bay Street is one of the best hotel deals in Savannah. It is in a rennovated warehouse right on the main drag. They frequently run internet specials on their website for $99 a night. Don't be scared by the name, it is a very nice hotel in the middle of the historic district. The Mullberry Inn is also a nice place to stay, but it is usually a little more expensive.

We usually eat at the seafood restaurants on River Street. There really are alot of good restaurants in the city.

Tybee Island is alot of fun, also. I saw some good recommendations in a previous post.

Don't mind Treedawg. He just likes to hear himself grumble.

They are friends of mine & my wifes; we also performed some of the renovations to their Bed & Breakfast; wwe are Restoration/ Renovation contractors here in Sav'h.

Sounds like you're going to the wrong parts of Savannah.

Ft. Pulaski, FT. McAllister, Ft. Jackson.

Plenty of historic houses, churches & museums downtown that are all within walking distance.

8th Air Force Museum in Pooler.

3rd ID Museum on Ft. Stewart.

Wormsloe plantation down near my house.

...and if all else fails, plenty of arfcomers to go shooting with.

Thanks for the help everybody.  I know it was a random question but I had a feeling I would get feedback.  Heather said this morning that I have 29 more days of freedom left....haha

Thanks again,

I'm sure there's a good side to Savannah, bit it's not my cup of tea.

If you a choice to be offshore fishing or walking around Savannah where would you be?

At time I do enjoy taking the boat from Tybee to River Street in Savannah. The parking is 2nd to none

Some of the Savannah arfcomers should join me offshore one day this summer.

My rules are simple and I'll be glad to share them if anybody is interested.

I like these threads about Savannah, because I live an hour south and all my kin folks from TN want to go there when they come and visit us.  I am getting burned out on day trips there and we've only done the tourist thing about 5 times so I am always open to suggestions (especially when it comes to food).  I don't think I could spend a week there.  I'll keep reading everyones suggestions.

What about a day trip to Sapelo Island?  How far is that from Savannah?  I work with a few people that told me I would probably like checking that out.  Haven't made it there yet.  Could be something to look in to.

I would suggest trying a good Bed and Breakfast at least for a couple of nights while you are here as an alternative to a regular hotel. After all, its your honeymoon.

I would also throw in dinner at the Pink House. Some love it, some don't. I'm in the former camp.

Take a drive down to St. Simons/Jekyl while you are here. It's only about 60 miles (roughly an hour +/- a few).

I don't think it is exactly honeymoon type material, but I am wanting to go camping this fall out on Cumberland Island which is about 1 1/2 hours south.

If ya'll like outdoors stuff, Cumberland makes for a good day trip (or camping).  You may need to make reservations ahead of time as there is limited space on the Ferries, and they limit the number of visitors to the island.  You can tour the ruins of Dungeness (sp?) and you'll see the wild horses.  The beaches are pretty nice too.  Most chicks dig the wild horses.  Just make sure you do a very thorough check for ticks after you leave the island, as they do carry lyme disease.  Cumberland is the only Nat'l Park in GA.  Technically, I think it is a Nat'l Seashore.  If you're lucky, you may get to see a sub going in or out of King's Bay.

Everything said above I think is pretty good advice.

+1 for Elizabeth's on 37th and the Crab Shack
Lady and Son is pretty good but always overcrowded with Paula being as popular as she is.
I would also recommend Tubby's Tank House (NOT the one on river street) out in Thunderbolt. It is a VERY laid back bar with great seafood and even the beef is pretty good.  Their Pina Coldas are pretty good too.

ETA: the gun shops in Savannah are nothing spectacular.  There is The Gun Shop or Store or something by Ogelthorpe Mall small smop with a very little bit of everything and Willmington Armory, which is about the size of a medium walk-in closet, but he has a few neat things.  wish you the best, have a great time!

I've stayed at the historic Jekyll Island hotel and its nice. Not too pricely either if I recall correctly.  It feels a little bit the set from the Great Gatsby.

Another thing to do in Savannah is to take the trolley tours.  I know they look cheesy, but everyone I know whose taken them learns a lot about Savannah and enjoys them.  Plus they are cheap.

+1 on the Pink House.

Not to be crass, but what does a trip to the Gulf Stream cost in gas alone these days? or is it diesel ?

Good advice.  We took one last year and were just saying we needed to do it again.

I have a 23' CC with a pair of very efficient Suzuki 4 strokes hanging off the back. A typical trip to the stream and back will burn the better part of 100 gallons of gas. You can figure $300.00 to be on the safe side.

TD,

I'll take you up on the fishing. Problem is I can only go mid-week (mon-thurs) .

One other thing. There are some great cruises leaving from the riverfront nightly. Dinner cruises, casino cruises, muder/mystery cruises, etc.

Out of Tybee we hit the westerly side of the stream at about 65 miles. The areas we fish are typically 75 miles offshore.

As far as a mid week trip it might be possible in a few weeks. I'll be meeting my wife and children to pick her up from a stay at the beach. She'll be flying in with the children and I'll have the pleasure of retrieving them.

I'll keep you posted.
