Alright Georgia guys, I just sent another action off to G. A. Precision in Kansas City Mo for them to do the good stuff for another long range rig. I originally wanted them to build me a rifle set up like the first pic, but came across the second rifle today.
Both rifles will be for 100-1000yd shooting. The one in the McMillan A5 (first pic) has a 22" barrel, the second rifle in the McMillan A4 has a 24" barrel. Both will do the job equally well to 1000yds, so it's not so much an issue of velocity but what it really boils down to is which one looks better. Don't pay any attention to finishes because it'll be finished in O.D. Green and the stock will be woodland. Whichever way I go, it'll have a US Optics SN3 (similar to the scope in pic #2) on it, the Badger/AICS floormetal and Badger bolt knob.

So what do you say, should I go with the A5 and 22" barrel or the A4 and 24" barrel?

22" is a little easier to get set up if you're ever in a tight spot.

Hell, in the ARFCOM tradition, GET BOTH!

I like the A5 stock better than the A4. I don't like the big square front on the A4.

Since you will inevitably get a suppressor, you may as well got with the 22" threaded for the can in your future.

Bill, you're right, I never figured a suppressor into the whole equation and the A5 is better suited for the shorter barrels-it seems to balance better. I don't really have a problem with the feel of the A4, I can go either way as I'm usually prone anyway. Whichever stock I go with, I'm getting it with the "Edge" technology to keep the weight down.
I just saw pictures of George's M40A3 "lite" over on Snipershide and it got me drooling

can you do an A4 with a 22 inch barrel?

Damn, I saw this title:

Which Way Should I Go?

And was going to tell you to ask chainshaw, because I'm pretty sure he goes both ways.

Okay, seriously, I'd vote for the shooret tube.  If 22" will get the job done, why have the extra 2" of barrel?  Both rifles look nice though.  Just subtle differences in the stock.

Are you going to used the DBM system?  Aren't the mags rather expensive and sometimes not very reliable?

Lawman you have some nice equipment.  I don't think you can go wrong with either. Thats some sharp looking rifles.  Oh yeah, I really like that scope. warDawg

K9PD, I could do an A4 with a 22" barrel, but it won't look quite "right" since the forearm for the A4 is slightly longer than the A5. I think the A5 balances out better with the shorter barrel.
Mark, yeah I'll be using the DBM system. The factory Remington DBM is known to be less than reliable, but this is the Badger Ordnance system that uses Accuracy International mags. I've used it on the green rifle in the A5 that we had out that weekend and it is about as reliable as its going to get with 0 failures so far. The Badger and H.S. Precision DBM systems are very reliable-it's the factory Remington's which suck.
Wardawg, thanks for the compliments-not mine yet though Check with me in about 6 weeks and I'll have one or the other. I know you said you were having difficulty with scope selection. The offer still stands if you want to try out any number of scopes if you can make it down this way.

I like the A4 better but it needs that cheekpiece on the A5. OR you could go with this WHich is my personal favorite. But I gotta get a better job before I can afford anything like that!

The cheekpiece on the A4 and the A5 are both sufficiently high enough to work with the low profile USO that I won't need the adjustable cheekpiece. I'd rather not have it anyway-it's just one more thing to come loose.
As for the A.I.C.S., I already have one-the 2.0 folder. While it is an ok stock, the McMillan's are more comfortable, especially for shooting in positions other than prone. The only reason I have one is because it is the best solution out there for making a compact rifle with the folding stock-which others can attest to, is rock solid.

I was in the same boat as you........I am sending a M700 action and a AICS to GAP for the same treatment. I am going with a 24" Broughton 5C threaded 5/8x24 tpi in a 1:10 twist. The Schneider is a GREAT barrel. Is there any upcharge to use it?

A lot of the guys have been going with shorter barrels and having pretty good luck with them, but the trend is now shifting back to the longer barrels. What you have to look at is how often will you be shooting to 1K yds??? If not that often then take the 22"..... but if you plan on shooting some F class I would get the 24" and push a 190 SMK to 2650 fps and the 1:10 barrel will work like a dream. Are you going to do any sniper classes? Or is this a range only gun?? I would take the longest barrel I could stand to use.

I like the A5.

B with a 22"

Jason, thanks for the info-but no news there. The velocity loss between the 22" barrel and 24" barrel is very minimal and either will do the job to 1000 just fine-I've been doing it w/ a 20" Mike Rock for a couple of years now with no problems either. It really is a matter of looks. As for what they're used for-you know that, tactical shoots and any classes I can get.
How's the 190 working? I gave you that load, remember

Anyway, I'm going with the 22" and A5 combo as I'll eventually get a suppressor for it and the shorter length would be better. I'm saving the A4 for a .338 Lapua project I'll be doing after this. I just became the owner of a Sako TRGS in .338 Lapua and will have George do the works to it.

I'm gonna have him do it up like this but with the McMillan A4 and a 26", as opposed to the 28" barrel.

Very cool looking rifle there.

Regarding cans, I should have that 762-SD from AAC sometime in January.  Buy a couple extra adapters and you can swap the can between rifles.  I'm anxious to try that can next to Kletz's can.

See ya.

That 338 looks bad! I like the stock color too(even thgouh it's kind of an oxymoron to see a 338 in urban camo) . I don't care much for the marbles MCM does, but the camos are cool.

I like the loooong barrel on the 338 as well.

Bill, the camo on the stock is what is known as G.A. Camo. I guess McMillan does it for G.A.P. I just talked to George about it this morning and I'm gonna start to slowly accumulate parts for the build. I'm thinking a 26" Schneider 5P "Overyonder" barrel, McMillan A4 (HEAVY fill), Badger knob, George is gonna build the base and modify the floormetal to use detachable TRG42 mags. I'll use a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 to top it off.
I hope to have this done by early next year.

Now, to accumulate parts-and brass. Brass is a $1.50 a piece!
