Anybody know how to fix a spring guide that won't go far enough in to get a bolt cover off an AK???

More info please,,,,

Maybe sounds like the stock-tang screw is preventing the spring from compressing far enough to remove the top cover.....................

I shot my AK74 this past weekend. Nothing unusual about its operation while at the range. When I went to clean it after getting home, I can't get the spring pushed far enough in to remove the bolt cover. I left it for a couple of days thinking I was just tired and frustrated (it was a long hot day and this was the last of approx 10 weapons to get cleaned).

I tried again tonight and still can't get the spring guide far enough in to remove the bolt cover. It will barely go in, but not far enough to free up the bolt cover. I can only depress it about 1/4".

Any help is appreciated.

Did you try cocking and then trying to push the top cover release"button?"

I see what is happening now (funny what a little 'attention to detail' will do). The spring guide has a small 'lip' on the top of the tab that protrudes from the bolt cover. When pressed inwards, the small lip is contacting the cover, preventing the guide from going further in.

ETA: I got it. Just took some time and effort. Sorry for the bother.

Now I know why you called in today.

Since it's Russian, I didn't think you ever needed to clean it.
