I was just reading the current Monticello newspaper and the Probate Court listed 6 people with range violations and were fined $270 each-any details? Dated June 6.

No idea.  I can understand things like violating hours, stand heights, etc., but the no clay pigeons on the berm thing really bugs me.

Revenue?

I do see idiots at the WMA. More than normal given the small sample size.

I have no idea what the fines are for, but I totally agree about that statement. The past 3 times I have been there for load developement I swore I'd never go back. There have been several occasions where I have seen people just wander down range without making sure everybody knows that the range is clear, etc. On other occasions, when the range is clear I have seen people on the firing line handling and sighting through weapons while people are down range.

Now I try to go in the middle of the week during the day, usually nobody is there then.

I agree about CE and most other public ranges for that matter.  The poor gun handling was the primary reason I joined a private range.

Aw man, it's cool to look down the barrel to see the bullet in the chamber.

I've seen my fair share of idiots on the range even at private ranges.

Bookhound, What private range do you go to?

I joined Pickens County.  They allow full-auto use (at designated times, but it's at least something).  They allow suppressors.  They have a 300-yard range.  There are a few other reasons, but these are the main ones.  It is a lot longer drive there than Athens, but some of these features make it worth it.

I'm sure it does make it worth it with the right toys.  You're welcome to join us at either the firing lane or ARC anytime you want.  You've got my number.  I'll have a lot more free time starting next week.

A-Train, shoot me a PM. I shoot out at Gunsite Hills about every other weekend. It's a Tactical Precision Rifle course with steel all the way out to 700yds. The guy who owns it is a former Navy Chief w/the Navy Shooting Team and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to long range shooting. He charges $20 to shoot all day.

Some of the WMAs, like CE, have 100-yard ranges.  And the ranges are free.

The private clubs are sometimes a nice way to go.  However, clubs like RBGC have some stupid (IMHO) rules - like one shot every six seconds!  No thanks.

I'll talk to ya about Pickens and some other ranges tonight.
