| Anyone been to the 57th Fighter Group Restaurant? I've been once long ago, and thought the food was quite good. However, I've not been in a while, and don't even know if the place is even open. I was thinking about taking my father there for his birthday for a change of pace, but don't know if its going to kill my wallet or not. Any suggestions? What's good? How much $$$? Is there a lunch buffet (I ask because that's what I remember having way back when). |

If you mean the 57th at PDK airport, I cannot recommend the service or the food. Most people go for the atmosphere, what little there is of that beacuse they have a Stearman or T-6 on hand. I work a the PDK airport and will suggest the Downwnind resaturant near the old tower as only a slightly better alternative. Kind of pricey but you can see alot of aircraft movements. I wish you luck... Kip |

Ghost-Shooter, Were you only looking for a good steakhouse for your dad or are all cuisines open to suggestion? I wasn't sure of that from your original posting so if you could clarify, it'll help narrow down the choices. WalterGA mentioned Stoney River and that's an excellent recommendation. The food is very good and it won't break your bank. IIRC, you can get away with spending about $35 (including a drink). That's a helluva deal. There's also a really cool restaurant off N Highland Ave called Highland Tap. It looks like a 30s bar (speakeasy) and their prime rib is awesome. It's even cheaper than Stoney River. Hope this helps. |
I was in college with Buddy Epps, but haven't seen him in years. Saw him mentioned on a GPB special about the Epps family. Is he still around? |
Try Dailey's downtown at the corner of Peachtree and International. Its a cigar/piano bar downstairs. Sit down dining upstairs. Menu is seasonal, so it is always fresh, in season, and changes ofter. Entrees run $15-25. The BEST part is the dessert bar. People come from all over JUST to have dessert. |

Oh yes, Ben (uncle Ben!). What a great guy. He died about two years ago. Sorry to hijack this thread but he was a real accomplished man. He soled an airplane at age 13 back before there were flying rules and got invited to the White House as a novelty kid pilot. Today you would be thrown in jail and fined. He helped pioneer jet travel by being one of the first airline jet captains. He built many airplanes including a replica of his fathers from the 20's and flew it! When I was building my airplane, he was a great resource for little tricks like filling aluminum tubing with sand and capping the ends before bending so the tube would not flatten. A real gentleman indeed... Kip |
Very cool. Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. |

The 57th is atmosphere only. I couldn't hardly eat the food with the lingering smell of jet fuel that permiated the place. It's cool to watch the planes come in and out but it's small and the food is fair at best. Stoney River is the bomb! I found it to be quite pricy for my cheap ass but the steamed fish thing they have was phenominal. Now I'm hungry!!! eta: Ray's on the River is ok for brunch but strap on the feed bag, you wont leave hungry, ghey-ron-teed! |

+1 on Stoney River. GS - closer to you is The Chart House off Paces Ferry (IIRC?). AWESOME sea food. Great salad bar too. They do also have steaks, but it is mainly a seafood place. The coconut shrimp is the best I've ever had. Save room (if possible) for their mudslide! It's so big two or three people could easily split one. |
