1.  The good ol' days of turning in a 2 weeks notice are long gone, especially in fields related to computers, computer science, and IT.  Give 'em a week.

2.  Expect to be shit-canned the day you tender your resignation.  See point 1.

3.  Looks good, and is short and to the point.

I am ok if I get canned.  there has been several people leave with a months notice.  I wasn't that brave. I don't think they will can me but I am ready if they do.  I have already verifyed that I have 15 days of vacation they have to pay me no matter what. SO I will be ok.

I'm telling you, don't go for the two weeks.  If you do, you'll be damning yourself as the "short-timer".

And if you get fired, you won't be using your accrued vacation time, because, well, you just got fucking fired.

Noamsayin'?

I wouldn't bother to write a letter unless its a large company with a lawyer or HR person on staff.

You cannot lose your earned vacation unless the company goes bankrupt, even if you are fired for cause. A lot of small companies don't believe this until they get raped in court with penalty judgements.

Make sure your position on the vacation is documented  (pay stub w/hours earned, letter indicating your accrual rate, etc.) Don't let them scare you into taking less than what you've earned. They are obligated to deduct your normal payroll taxes from any vacation payout.

Did you sign any non-compete documents or provided training reimbursement, i.e. stupid stuff while you were there?

Don't count on them giving you two weeks + vacation. I'd just say I'm resigning immediately but I can remain an employee for up to two weeks to help you during the transition.

Don't burn bridges.

This is very much true.  But they don't have to cut you a check for your accrued vacation 5 seconds after they terminate your employment, either.

In this State no. In Cali they do have to give you the check as they walk you out the door, or its an instant misdemeanor for the employer. They were trying to give the employee's the bum rush as the 'migra was storming the building.

I don't know what the law is here, but last job I left they paid out vaca as an extraordinary item next pay period (2 wks) and my severance kicked in 2 weeks after that.

Seems decent enough, but dont expect to be there 2 weeks, most the time thats your last day when you turn in your "2 week".

Last time I gave a notice they kept me 2 weeks, but Id be ready for them to let you go that day.

That's typically what I've seen here as well.  I've talked with other people who had to wait up to 6 weeks for their accrued vacation payout after being terminated, and while that really sucks, at least it's not the norm.

Yea it is really going to help us out.  And now MrsBRF is working part time too. It will take a couple months and we will be back to normal.

Fun having to support dependents, no? Adds a little excitement into the job mix!
