I am looking for recommendations on a class or classes to help me improve my pistol shooting. I would hate to have to rely on current skills to protect my family. My technique is awful. I need to start with the basic

I was feeling pretty bummed about missing yesterday’s Athens shoot when my wife surprised me by excusing me from her honey do list and sent me to the range.

I took my brand new HK USP .45 and my P7M8 to Bullseye in downtown Larry Ville.
The weapons shoot just fine.  I was the problem.

I had forgotten how difficult pistol shooting can be.  I need a lot of work to improve my pistol shooting. I hope to find a class before my CCW (fingers crossed) shows up in early February.

Bookhound

Sorry I missed you at yesterday’s shoot.  I am sure you will love shooting the P7. It’s a sweet little pistol.  Even I could hit the target with it.  he
Thanks

I agree and of course: practice, practice, and practice.

I would ask some of the guys here to help you out a little.  I know that at the last FOP shoot TBS took me and MrsBRF and gave us some basics with the handgun and we learned a lot.

Any of the guys here who have been to a few classes could help you out if you are as bad as you think.

I'd been shooting for 6 months (self trained) and discovered after one 2-1/2 hour class that I had been doing EVERYTHING wrong. So I've had to un-learn a lot of bad habits.

One of the guys at Athens Rifle Club is a pistol shooting competitor and I was out there on sunday after book and the other guys had left and got to shoot in a preliminary competition.  He was trying out a new course.  He offered to help me anytime I wanted.  If i remember right, didnt you say you worked in athens?  Where you live at?  Might be worth your while to join ARC to get him to help you out as well.

I was out at the range from 12-630 pm, so you could have dropped by at anytime.

If your interested, email me and we'll get together for some shooting sessions.  Bookhound and a few others on the board can vouch for my credentials.

VSP is a very experienced, accomplished shooter.  He can help you out.

mike_benedict is another good local resource.

Between these two guys, you should be able to get some assistance.  VSP is a lot closer to your side of town though.

I've taken a few classes and one thing has been said by all the instructors.  I think Super Dave said it the best (i.e. the most colorful way), so I'll paraphrase him.  "Any instructor who tells you his way of doing something is the best and only way is full of shit."  I think the best thing you can do is get some assistance from several people and figure out what works best for you.

When I first starting meeting "GA gang" folks, ARH and zzxx99 both helped me with some basic pistol skills.  My shooting immediately improved.  Then I took some classes and changed a few things here and there.  My pistol skills are light years from where they were just a few years ago.  If you want to meet up at Bullseye sometime, I'd be happy to show you the things that work for me.

I would add when you find an instructor talk to them personally and see that their personality and yours match up.  Be sure of what kind of class you are taking and pack your gear to suit the class.  Nothing is worse than bringing the wrong gear or having the wrong expectations.  Even if you’re an experienced shooter start with the basic class at a new school.

Guys,

Thanks for all the responses and the offers to help me improve my pistol shooting skills.  I will be contacting those kind folks who have offered to coach me. Check your email have
Hopefully I’ll be ready for a Super Dave class next time one rolls around.

There is a variety of instruction offered in the Atlanta area.  Many classes are hosted at the South River Gun Club and the Pickens County Gun Club.  Feel free to contact me for training information.

You are also welcome to come out and watch the Sdave class this weekend.

The-Bald-Monk, you should take Mike up on this offer, even if you are only there part of the day.  You will learn a LOT just by watching.  You will also meet some really great people, Mike included.  This will also give you an opportunity to check out some of the equipment other shooters use.

If you've got any free time this weekend, I advise you to seriously consider heading out to the Pickens County Range.

Ken Forbus is a pretty accomplished shooter that offers training classes at different levels.
He occasionally lurks on this site.
Most of his classes are out of the Little River Gun club in Bremen.
Just another choice to throw out at you. He also has a forum on his site.
