Wanted to take comments on having our own website.
This website would have Post pic shoots current ones
and say a list of upcoming events etc.  Even could do
a Roster with pic of each person if thats of interest.

Also a monthly news letter? weekly?

If this interestest everyone let me know I am offering to put it together, host it and update it.

Thanks
Wolf

Here's the problem:

We tried it before, and it failed miserably after about 3 months.  It really takes some initiative to keep something like that moving for an extended length of time.  Unless you are willing to push people to visit the site and contribute to the newsletter and post items for sale and what have you, stagnation will set in.

Then, there's the constant influx of newbies who don't know the secret handshakes and won't know about the place until we point it out to them explicitly.

Don't want to dampen your spirit or anything, but these are very real problems that you will face.  I think it's a great idea, but it would be a lot of work to keep it active.

I think a sticky at the top of both of our hometown forums would be good enough.
Its not my job to push people to the site, just to build it, host it, and update it.
If others don’t contribute to it "IE news letter and other stuff" then it will get slow.  And if it does so what we still have the site and as people come and go they can be added to the site etc.
Your not damping my spirit, its just an idea.   Just how active does it really need to be?
Pics of past shoots, roster, Monthly newsletter?, and upcoming events etc.

+1

I check GA and gulf states (AL) more times during the day than I will admit while I'm dragging ass at work.  So for me that would be a great idea.

p.s. I have mucho grandes pictures from past FOP shoots that I bet a bunch of you guys haven't ever seen.

I repeat: we tried it before.
[quote[Just how active does it really need to be?If it isn't, people will stop bothering to visit, and even the most cantankerous curmudgeons will fail to stir up enough interest in it.  In short, you'd be updating it for yourself.

Again, I think it's a great idea, but it's a job even Sisyphus would turn down.

Well, Mr. Negativity.  Seriously, why don't we have a nice, democratic vote or something.  No punch cards, please.  You GA boys border more of FL than us.

the_reject is correct.  We tried it and it failed.  I think the problem is that with ARFCOM, you can come here and check the local stuff AND a lot of other forums.  That means you get a lot more traffic on this site.  There are MANY local guys who just pop into the Hometwon forum after checking other parts of the site.  You'll find many of those guys not wanting to go to another website to check local stuff.  It's a convenience thing.

The other board, which ar-wrench took the time to setup, got very little traffic and eventually no one went to it.  It got shutdown for lack of use.

I'm open to all ideas though.

Wasn't that another discussion forum that we used when ARFCom was slow/down? I don't think that is what wolf-ym is talking about. Maybe he could make a demo page so that there is no question about what it could be. It also sounds like he is willing to host pictures and such, we all don't have picture hosting accounts here and that would be very helpful. It would take diligence to keep it fresh and up-to-date though.

I'm not being negative.  wolf-ym was soliciting comments, and so I provided a real-world example of what happened the last time we tried it.  Whether or not he chooses to go ahead with it is entirely up to him.  I would welcome it, much as I did the previous iteration.  The success or failure or his venture doesn't necessarily hinge upon what happened in the past.

Wow great feed back guys!!!
On our website we won't have a duccsion forum,, we will leave that part here.  It would be
to much I think to go from one site that offers so much like AR and try to make it happen
on our own site.  Having said that I think we should have what I listed in the above posts.
Pics, news letter "anyone want to say I"? and upcoming events.  I think having a roster would
really help out cause there are times for newbiess that we talk to have no idea myself included
who we think we are talking to but are thinking of someone else.  So a mug shot would be kool.

Keep ideas coming guys.

Personally, I think the coolest idea is the mug shot page.  Meet someone at a shoot and can't remember who they are?  No problemo!  Look for their ugly mug on the website and now you know their handle, their name, and maybe a few choice tidbits they've chosen to divulge about themselves.

Kind of a "Meet the Idiots" type of thing...

Good luck and if you need help let me know. I just don't think the upkeep is worth the effort. Maybe we could sticky a mug shot page here? These guys (the site owners) pour a lot of energy into keeping this thing up... Not to piss on your parade, but I've had poor experiences maintaining my own interest sites.

We have a Club page for ARRIGHT www.arright.cjb.net something i tossed together quick one weekend so when arfcom failed we would have a contact page. We also had a seperate yahoo chat group setup. It all pretty much died when ARFCOM got it's last upgrade.
