hey guys,  I finally got off my ass and am ordering a stock from pete.  I am in the process of getting my flat top upper and will get a lower soon.

My question is Which flash supressor should I get?
Also I don't have a clue about gas systems.  What do you guys use?
I just want to get the best set up for our build in sept.

I'll probably get one from Armalite.  I don't thik there are many options of 308s around.

I remember seeing a very nice thread, with photos, comparing many different flash hider types in the AR-15 section.  I tried to find it but could not use the "search" function, which appears to be down.

Phantom is probably the hotest FH going now and I like it, but it's hard to beat the good ole' A1 birdcage FH.

I like the Vortex and the Phantom best.  The Vortex works slightly better at eliminating the flash, but it has four open-ended prongs, which can get snagged on things like brush.  The Vortex also WILL kick up dirt when shooting prone.  The Phantom is solid on the bottom, so flying dirt isn't such an issue.

Hey Book,

Your Phanthom FH is solid on the bottom?  How old is it?  I've got two (including the one on my BM M4) and they are open all the way around.  They are the older style that have the open prong ends, similar to the Vortex.

I like the older Phanthoms FH myself.  Like Book mentioned though, the Vortex is also a nice one that's pretty effective.

I believe the newer ones are closed on the bottom.  The older ones are open.  My bad.

I like the SMITH A-15 Muzzle Break. You can get it from DPMS for $39.95.

I'll see if I can't find a pic.

BTW, you can't have a flash supressor until Sept. 14th.

Mine are all at my sister's house.  Seriously.

Kind of... but are called sound suppressors.

Now serious... MBs backward shockwave sound has been a constant complaint.  Mostly if you are shooting in a row, your "neighbours" will get the "best" of it.

I believe that the simple physics of the device (creating a reaction to the gases moving foward by redirecting some backwards) is enough.   That is, it is a side effect of the device's physics.

Phantom Flash Suppressor / Compensator (5C1 or 5C2) with closed bottom slot.

Not sure I understand this.  Did you already buy an upper?

Yes but it is a stripped upper.  I have never built an AR before.  I think I need a tubefor the gas right?

That's a big 10-4.  What type of barrel are you getting?  If you buy a carbine barrel, you get a carbine gas tube and roll pin.  If you get a rifle length barrel, you buy a rifle length gas tube.  Why not just buy a barrel assembly?  That will include the barrel, delta ring assembly, gas tube & pin, front sight post (& spring & detent) and handguards.  Done.

That might be a good idea.  Do you have a suggestion on where to make that purchase?
