A buddy was up at a remote deer camp with his young family and they came across a 4’ western diamondback.  It really spooked him and when he got back he asked just “how dangerous are rattlesnakes”.  He asked what I thought about one of his boys 4-6 getting hit.  I said “Get them to the hospital 30 minute drive at +75MPH and pray all the way”.

We killed a 5'+ timber rattler a few years ago in Taylor County.  He had 13 rattles and a button.  BIG snake.  Snakes are one reason I don't turket hunt more often.  We see a lot during (deer) bow season too.  During bow season I drive right to my tree stand.  After seeing that monster a few years ago I don't want to take the chance on walking.

Nope.  We have a VERY large king snake that lives in oour backyard.  He kills all the copperheads that he finds in our creek.  Before he moved onto the property, we saw more copperheads than I cared to see.  Now we see none.  The king snake stays.

I had a huge king snake that lived around the house for several years.  He did a bang up job of keeping the copperheads away.  He got into the house only once, and I explained that that was not allowed.

About a year after that he got ahold of a rat that had a belly load of poison, killed the snake.

Started seeing copperheads within 6 weeks....

I have a black snake or King liveing under my house. I find the skins all the time. I have stoped and picked up Kings that was warming them selfs on the road early in the morning and threw them in the back of the truck .I let them go at the house. Im actually more squimish towards spiders. I hate them things. My wife will step on them with her bare feet .I have to get a shoe or something. A snake Im not scared of or have a problem with as long as I know it's there. We ( my redneck gang) use to go ketch snakes as a young and dumb lad. I have pinned and pick up several cotton mouths in my day by pinning there heads and getting a grip on there head. Yes I know STUPID. But I lived to tell about it and Im alittle older and wiser.WarDawg

Just the other day my 7 year old graciously wanted me to see a snake that she had found in the drive way.  Yep, baby copperhead!  Scared the bejesus out of me, had the ole "snake" talk again with the little ones.

That sort of thing happened to my Dad by me!!! I was about 7 and saw a snake in a wooded lot next to my home and I caught it. It was about 8"-12" long. I thought all snakes was cool due to the fact watching my older brother catch grass snakes and handle them.I took this brownish snake into the house and woke my poor dad .He worked night shift at the brewery in Perry.I said look what I got while dangling it in his face.He knocked it out of my hand and got a boot and stomped my pet snake. It turns out to be a baby timber rattler. But it never bite me . My dad was shaken by waking up with a pit viper staring at him.I have many snake adventures that me and my Redneck gang incountered growing up as a young boy in the sticks( Lizella ). While I wouldn't want my child to do the things I have..... I personally wouldn't change any of the adventures, because luckly we never got hurt just stained underwear. LOL...Damn seems a million years ago. Where does time go??????????? WarDawg

I so agree WD.  I grew up with a creek on our property, learned at an early age about them heathen serpents as my grandmother would say.  That still didn't stop my brother and I from fishing most summer afternoons and shooting cotton mouths sunning on rocks, which we considered an olympic shooting event and even had a yearly "most kill" champion.  Yep, those were the days.

I would recommend that he purchase a general anti-venom and keep it in the firdge.  This would avoid the 75 MPH drive.  But if he does take this advice, make sure that he test it on all possible recipiants to know if they are allergic to the anti-venom.
