They (Mecklenburg Sheriff) says they need a copy of my DD-214 to document that I was Honorably Discharged before they will issue my permits.

What the fork?  Curious if I show up with document in hand if they will go ahead and issue my permits or delay it further.   They have never asked this before.

Take it to them. Post the results here. Glad I don't live in Charlotte any more.

Union County Sheriff needed a copy of mine too.  I don't know why.  I made a copy of my honorable discharge certificate and they made a copy of that.  No issues.

A dishonorable discharge is the same as a felony, when it comes to buying a firearm. If you have a DH, you can't get a gun. They want to make sure that isn't part of your history. Not really strange, from my point of view.

It's an option for them. If they don't ask, and somebody has been dishonorably discharged, they are probably banking on them marking it down on the 4473. You may remember that the 4473 does ask about dishonorable discharges. The downside of that theory is if somebody does get a pistol permit, and then just lies of the 4473, we don't do the NICS check in NC. That means they get away with a firearm they can't legally purchase. There isn't a way of stopping that without the sheriff asking to see the forms or me doing a NICS check.

I've gotten permits here before in the past 15 years. Just the first time they've asked for my DD-214. Not a big deal just unusual.

Harnett County requires the same.  For active guys they require some Fort Bragg form before applying.  A bunch of crap since I live off post.

They never asked for mine. In fact when I got my FFL I wasn't asked for it either. They asked on the application if you are a veteran and what branch of service but never asked for the DD-214. Odd but maybe it's a new thing?

Went there today with a copy of my DD-214 but I only had the one page and they wanted the two page version.  Having to send away for my two page version. Good thing I registered a certified copy of it at the court house in New Hanover County.

What's a two page version? I've only had the 1 page version and I got out in '92.

Meck sucks as you can expect from a Dem run county.  They gave a friend hell for being born in Germany(his parents were Army officers)  and it took him months to get a purchase permit.

You just need to get a CHP and you won't have to worry about this crap anymore.

Not sure myself.  However, I think the second page notes the condition of your discharge (honorable discharge).

Do you have the diploma like wall certificate?  I didn't dig up my DD214 and just brought the wall cert as it clearly states HONORABLE DISCHARGE across the middle.  I was G2G.

Just a thought. When the latest HB bill went through there was a lot of flap about doing away with the purchase permits. And the N.C.S.A  rolled out the whole dog and pony show to get the part trying to remove the PP from the language left out. It was argued that the current PP system had some big flaws allowing for folks who were felons to use a PP after they were ineligible. I am sure with the bad press in the media pointing out the flaws in the system, and the push to take away their money maker, that the NCSA got things reviewed and changed on the local county level state wide. It would not surprise me a bit if they tighten things up all the way around because of the push back from the Freedom loving pro 2A crowd for less restrictions. But just a thought I have no real proof.

Yeah but being in between jobs and might have to move, I've packed up all my belongings except for the essentials.  Have no idea which box I put that framed certificate in.

It will take a few weeks for central records to get a copy or your DD214, 1 week or less if you pay a service to expedite.  I could search through a lot of boxes in a week.

I filed a copy with the New Hanover County courthouse as soon as I ETS'd.  They sent me two certified copies of it yesterday.  Should have it in a day or so.

Just a note, that online request only applies if you are the next of kin, a spouse or child. If you are not one of those two, you have to do a FOIA just like everyone else in writing.
