Upstate South Carolina is a great area. Greenville in particular.  Lots of big companies like BMW, GE, Michelin in the area.  If there is anything specific you want to know, I'm sure there are plenty of people in here that could help you out.

Alot better down here than up there.  Better weather, less stupid laws, less unions, better attitudes.

The Carolinas welcome you and your tax dollars will hopefully continue to be better spent here
Seriously thou, its a good place to live and work. I came here in 2003 for my career and haven't looked back.

I worked for NCDOT for 12 years up until December of 2011, when I moved out to consultant. NCDOT is trending to more than 50% of total funds spent going out to consultant.  Depending on what type of engineering tech work your wife does, there are plenty of engineering firms that do all aspects of transportation investigation/design.  North Carolina is an extremely engineer-friendly state, as is South Carolina.  Housing prices are looking good in/around the "Triangle" in NC as well.  Also, and NC has always been "transplant friendly" for the most part.  The Research Triangle area is extremely diverse.  Check out some of the less-populated counties that surround the larger metropolitan areas.   Just my two-cents worth.

Just remember the reasons you are wanting to leave NY please don't come down here and then say well thats not how we did it in NY and then want to make this place like the place you left

You can move to Cary, it will be like you never left New York, well, except for the weather, and at lack of a AWB.

Greenville has one of the highest per capita of engineers in the country, and also has one of the highest per capita of foreign investment (companies) in the country.

I live in Columbia now, but Greenville is my preferred SC city.  Charleston is great too, but if you're a gun owner, the upstate is the place to be.

Look at Traveller's Rest SC (right at the base of the mountains), and right outside of Greenville.

Of S.C. Gamecocks.. 2 hours to charleston, 3 hours to greenville 1.5 hours to charlotte.  3.5 to atlanta.. 3.0 to myrtle beach.. 1.5 to augusta..  from here in columbia.

Not a stone cold chance in hell...

I was a military brat and lived all over the place. I ended up in NY because when the oil business went bust in Texas in the 80's, I couldn't even get a job at pizza hut. Moved to NY and got a job right away been here ever since.

We had this same discussion 5 years ago and almost left but now the time has come.

Believe me when I say the absolute last thing we want is for the place we end up to be like it is here.

SC is a solid red state.  NC is a toss-up.  We could really use your vote in NC.  If you find a job in SC that is close to the NC/SC state line, I would encourage you to move there.  Also, expand your options to Virginia as well.  VA and NC are for the most part conservative with far better gun laws than NY but these two states need an influx of conservative voters.  I will admit that SC has lower taxes than NC but either way, you would still be paying less than NY.

If you don't have a dog in the fight as to family or anything, given the choice between Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, I would rank North Carolina as my last choice (but I have family in NC, so that is where I ended up).  NC has the highest taxes and the worst gun laws of the three.  Virginia has the best gun laws of the three, I don't know how its taxes compare to SC, but they are much less than NC.  Just avoid Northern Virginia if looking into Virginia, unless you like liberals, traffic, and being near the DC/Southern Maryland cesspool.

How are conservative "transplants" treated in the Greenville, SC area?

Between the extremely high taxes and insane gun laws, I am considering a move from upstate NY to Greenville. My company has a plant in Greenville, so it is possible that I could relocate.

It sounds like a paradise compared to NY; SC has no unions, low taxes, conservative, gun/2A friendly, etc. Am I dreaming, or do places like this still exist in the US?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Our "transplants" are from all over the world: French (Michelin Tire), Germany (BMW), several banks (TD, Ceretus?), GE (Ohio, NY, CT), etc. Have no problem with any one moving here - you can get hot tea or iced tea in winter or summer (and free refills - unlike my time in Rochester, NY!).

I grew up in Pennsylvania and have lived in SC since 1986.  I have no desire to move back, and after you experience life in a free state vs. NY, neither will you.

I live just outside Charleston.  It's nice, but I think the upstate area would be more to your liking.  It's flat and swampy down here along the coast.

Here's a teaser:

A few years ago the state eliminated the requirement for an annual safety inspection on your car and just made everybody responsible for maintaining their vehicles.

SC is a shall-issue state for Concealed Weapon Permits.  The state cannot deny you a permit without a valid reason, such as a criminal record.  After you get your permit, when you go to buy a gun from a dealer you fill out the 4473, hand over the ducats, and you're out the door with your hardware.

After the confiscation in NOLA following Katrina, the SC legislature passed a law prohibiting the government from confiscating firearms from law-abiding citizens duriong an emergency.

There is no gun registration, and without a permit you can carry a loaded handgun in your console or glovebox.

Where I am right now!

We are looking at Greenville, Phoenix, maybe Raleigh (not too enthusiastic about that).

Can anyone suggest decent high schools in the Greenville area? Our time frame means the youngest would start her sophmore year in a free state.

edit (BTW, I am not worried about southerners being bummed about northerners moving in. I lived in TX for a while and it was all in good fun...)

Been a while since my kids graduated. Eastside, Riverside, JL Mann, to name a few. Also there are Charter High schools - acceptance based on grades? Also St. Hoseph's Catholic, Christ Church Espiscopal. Furman Univ is here, Clemson 30 miles out, numerous smaller liberal arts, nursing Colleges: Converse, Lander, etc.

Private schools (mostly church run) and home schooling are very big in SC.

There is an extensive home schooling organization/network.

Not no but fuck no in a million years would I ever try and make SC or any other state like NY. I've pretty much decided on SC and now all I have to do is figure out what area in SC to move to.

I grew up on the Jersey Shore. Private Catholic from grades 1 through 12. Moved to SC and never looked back. I am in Greenville County and my kids go to Paris Elementary and Sevier Middle School. I can honestly say that their school academics are on par if not better than the education I received in NJ albeit the religion aspect.

I live at the base of Paris Mountain in northern greenville county and it is absolutely beautiful here. I have Paris Mountain State Park out my back door, city of Greenville 5 miles to the south, beautiful lakes and mountains 45 minutes north and a short 3 hour trip to Charleston Beaches in the summer for a quick weekend getaway.

92 miles to Charlotte iheading NE, 135 miles SW to Atlanta and 152 miles to Knoxville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg to the NW

I think you have to live here (NY) for a while to truly understand how "nails on chalkboard" that statement sounds. I can't imagine a worse fate than spending time, $$, risk and stress on familly to end up where you left...

Don't tell anybody on the CA HTF but we are thinking of relocating out there too.  Things are just getting way too ridiculous out here, and that's coming from a 4th generation Sounthern Californian.  but damn, I'd miss the real mountains, the deserts, the Redwood curtain and nice weather.  Swapping them for hurricanes, humidity, bugs, humidity, etc.  But our only grandson is back there, and it doesn't look like any more are going to happen for several years, if at all.

I did notice that if I got funny looks when I said "I went to the real USC" but if I said but I don't like Clemson, the family smiles.  People get purple when I say, "Are you going to blame that on Sherman, too?"

My son is stationed down at Shaw AFB, in Sumter, and I agree that the coastal areas and upstate areas are real nice.  I'm not sure you could pay me enough to live around Sumter, unless I could get a place with enough room to shoot off the back porch.

I saw Raleigh on your list of potential areas (although last). My advice would be to stay the hell away from the Raleigh area. With all of the Universities that place is a liberal training camp. The advice you have been giving about upstate SC is spot on.
