hi all, wife and I are looking into the possibility of moving, and are considering North Carolina. Anything, and I mean anything you can tell us about your state will be helpful. We have never even been there to visit, so quite literally know nothing about the place, other than it has to be worlds better than this liberal cesspool. Specific info needed would be school systems, job market(I am a GM auto technician, wife is going into the medical field) & salaries to expect, taxes, general cost of living, housing market, areas to avoid, and of course places to shoot, possibly to get involved with(NRA instructor as well) teaching shooting. Whatever you can tell me about your AO would be appreciated. We are looking about 2 years down the road for this to happen.
Thank you for your help. |
| I live in pinehurst and I think it might be the place for you. Lots of Yankees here but they always vote red. Moore county wildlife conservation club is a great shooting range. Lots of hospitals around for the wife and we are approximately 30 mins away from Ft Bragg for the rest of your gun needs. I'm not sure about the Gm tech thing, but I definitely think you should give us a look. Great public school system too. |

I was born and raised in Gloucester County.
Avoid the Raleigh/Durham area and Charlotte. Lots of carpetbaggers from up north. Try to assimiliate once you get here. Too many liberals move here and try to bring their belief systems with them. Wish I were kidding... |

Wish I were kidding...[/quote] AMEN to that I once had a conversation with a loud mouth yankee who like to put the people of NC down. I once ask him if things were so much better where he came from why did he move down here his answer was to get away from all the crap and bs laws. At which point I ask him if that was the case why was he trying his best to make NC like the place he left. Op if you move down here and live out in the county you need to be for warned people here have farms and old junk cars and or run down houses on their property. If you come down here runing your mouth and telling people what they should do or shouldn't do on their land you are going to have a problem. It may be less on a problem down south close to the cities but in the mountains its a different story. And yes it does happen right now a bunch of carpetbaging liberals are trying to shut down a farm close to charlotte because the smell is bothering them. The problem is the farm was there long before they move in and built their eye sore house's. Then there was the drag strip that got close down because the liberals didn't like the noise even though the drag strip was out in the middle of nowhere before they came in and built a housing development next store. |

Amen, Shuffle Town dragstrip was there decades earlier. I am very rural and almost noone within a mile has lived here as long as I have. One Saturday afternoon a County policeman drove up during a shooting session. Very nice young man. My neighbors are upset. They say they never hear a peep from over here except maybe 2 or 3 weekend afternoons per month. Thats when they hear several hundred rounds, possibly along with a hundred or so secondary rounds. County officer says "looks like you are safe and legal, have a wonderful day". I respond "You Sir as well, send my regards to my transplanted neighbors". I do not wish to bother anyone, we only fire within noise ordinance hours and never during church service hours. |

Thanks for all the info, and please keep it coming.....as for telling others what to do on their own land, I just may be one of those with the old junkers around fi we do come there, so ain't too concerned about that. And I am with you on newbies trying to get things closed down. Up here it usually winds up being the county airports that recent arrivals try to shut down due to being on the flight path. Though they have to know about it due to real estate disclosure laws. They simply choose to get the good deal because of that and then work non-stop to get rid of it to up their property value. We just want to be able to do things at our own pace and not haev to worry about the nosy neighbors. But any cool decent neighbors will be welcome to stop by pretty much whenever..... If we should come down to check things out, I will be asking for a guide around if any of you wouldn't mind. |

There's PITA people everywhere, the bigger cities here, CLT, the Triad, and the Triangle seem particulary rife with them. Not much public land, and what there is, is pretty regulated, but bein from the eastern seaboard that shouldn't be new to you. Not too many real long ranges, quite a few clubs around the state, some easier to join some less restrictive than others, research. The state is full of medical facilities of all sorts, has a long history with the industry. Good auto techs should generally be able to find work I'm a heavy diesel tech and everytime I search I find far more auto postings. I don't know how Jersey ranks, but the wages are low compared to what I was used to, dealerships less so, but still lower, obviously any medium or larger city will probably have a gm dealer.
Recent lessons, they tax everything, vehicles, boats, and trailers, as property, in addition to registration and titling fees, not allot, but it can add up. Also they want titles on everything, and bills of sale, can add some frustration to titling and registering. |

OK, so my wife has been spending some time online looking at places and she seems to be honing in on a few, Hickory, Boiling Springs, Fayetteville, Pinehurst, and some place north of Charlotte the name of which escapes me at the moment. Are these areas worth looking deeper into? Are there specific areas to avoid like the plague? And by that I mean reminiscent of Camden NJ, consistently the most dangerous city in the country. Is there anything specific I should look into in these locations?
Thanks for the replies, and I apologize in advance for the brain picking I will be doing on this in the future. |
| Fayetteville is okay for a job market, especially since you're a GM tech, but beyond that, if you're set on living in the fayetteville area, look into Rockfish/Raeford or Hope Mills. If you hate Jersey, you won't like Fayetteville either. It's busy, people drive like shit, lots of noise and over population. They've been enforcing that people get rid of "eye sores" a lot more here too lately. To go as far as making salvage yards out in the outskirts either shut down or put up huge fences and make it look like a brand new car dealership. Hope Mills is okay, it's where I live now. Theres a far better chance of a more relaxed lifestyle out that way, and it's not 15 minutes from downtown Fayetteville. Southern pines and Sanford are beautiful, and about 40 minutes away from most of the dealerships in Fayetteville, but there are businesses in those cities as well. If I were going to settle down in North Carolina, that's where I'd go beyond a shadow of a doubt, especially if you like to golf. |

Move to Cary and it'll be like you never left. You mean the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. How about for a displaced southerner trying to get back out from behind enemy lines?? Yer good friend. Me, I. might be moving to Florida if my interview tomorrow goes well. Hate to move but can't stand being unemployed any longer. |
