Hello everyone!

I'm going with my family up to Columbia in a couple weeks for the Auburn game. Actually we're staying in Hilton Head, but our plan is to kinda spend the day in Columbia. I was wondering if anyone here could provide some insight on things to do before and after the game. My uncle is on a quest to see all the SEC stadiums/campuses, so anything steeped in Gamecock history would be awesome. Also my brother in law can become a baby if he can't watch the UT game, so any good recommendations for a sports bar in the area would be awesome as well.

Thanks guys!

I'd pass on Maurice's.  It is not what it once was and I can point you to better BBQ if that's what you are looking for.

USC's campus is several blocks from the stadium.  The Horseshoe, Longstreet Theater, etc are all on campus near the SC State House.

Five Points is the college hangout area with all the college bars and is a couple blocks off campus.

The Vista is the more adult/young professional entertainment area with nicer bars, restaurants, and shops.  There is a Wild Wing Cafe, Wild Hare, Carolina Ale House, Wet Willie's and more in the Vista area.  Of these I'd go to the Wild Wing or Carolina Ale House to watch the game.  The Carolina Ale House also has a cool roof top bar.

If you are looking for other types of destinations just say so.

Traffic in and around the stadium will be NUTS.  Take your time.

Maurices BBQ i wouldnt recommend either. They are on the Shaw AFB black list (places where mil are not allowed to go). And not for the violence cause there is none. But because of who they support. You could always stop by PSA and see what deals they are offering. You might even get a free hat just for walking in. I did!

The reason Maurice's BBQ is off limits to military personnel is because the owner (Maurice Bessinger) only flies the SC state flag and the Confederate battle flag at his businesses in protest of the encroachment of the federal government. Well, that's half the story, anyway. In truth, he's really not someone you'd want to associate with much less financially support.

There's better BBQ out there, anyway one place is just down the street from the USC stadium (on Shop Road).

I did some checking on the "off limits" thing and that was dropped a long time ago. The only place "off limits" to Shaw Personnel are a thug-drug nightclub across the street from the base (Club Mi-Am-Mi) and the newly-built docks at the Wateree Rec Area up in northern Kershaw County (because the safety inspection certificate hasn't been issued yet).

If you don't mind an Ohioan chiming in (I grew up in Columbia though) the SC State Museum was very impressive when I was there in the mid nineties.
