So I searched the web and found some shooting ranges by Charlotte NC but none offered rifle to the public...
Does anyone know of a shooting range in Charlotte NC that is reasonably close? Can you provide the email if you do? |

VERY CLOSE to Charlotte (Belmont, NC) has a place called Shooters Express. They offer indoor rifle out to 25 yards. Aside from that, I hear Rankin Lake (training facility for Gaston County police) allows the public to shoot at their outdoor rifle range occassionally.
You should be able to find contact info for both places using google, and about 5 minutes of your time. Rankin Lake will be harder to find...as I just spent 45 seconds looking, and didn't come up with a good number to call. |

be careful, Shooters Express usually has a good inventory of toys, you may be tempted to add to your collection. been there they seem like to me Their younger salespeople can be a little condescending. I was a customer of theirs long before they worked there. There used to be a hottie lady who worked there, but I don't see her anymore. Terry (sales manager), Dean (general manager), and the gunsmith (damn, forgot his name) are all cool guys. The Range Master is also pretty cool. |

Here's a map I try to keep updated: Click Here
The Gaston County range is technically the closest public 100 yard range. There's one out near Albemarle called Effird's Rifle Range. I don't think he allows daily access, but the yearly membership is supposed to only be $150 or so. CR-PC is a great facility, but who has $500 to join?!?! Mecklenburg Wildlife Club has a good facility too, but it's $370 for the first year. You could drive down to the Sumter National Forest in SC (about 1.5 hours) to one of their two public ranges. Don't count on Uwharrie opening any time soon (if ever). When it was open, it was an easy 45-50 minute drive from Charlotte. Another option is to shoot a match at a private range. Almost all of them are open to the public. You're shooting under the match rules, but at least you're shooting. CR-PC does NRA high power and there are a few multi-gun shoots in the area that will give your rifle skills a work out. |

A friend of a friend (I know him as well, but not very well) just joined, and should be done with his probation any day now. I am looking to hit him up for access to this range...and eventually to be my "mentor" so that I can join. The proximity of my house to their range is too good to ignore regardless of the price. It's only $250/year right? The $500 upfront includes a one time $250 fee right? |

PHA is about 40min up 85 http://www.phashoots.com/
$300+$125 to join, $125/yr This is where plan to join in the near future. |

I bought a pistol there and they gave me free range time. |

Cost is $200 per year after joining. You also get 24/7 access to the indoor facility. I joined by myself w/o a sponsor and had no issues. biggest thing for me was taking my family to a place that had great facilities as well as all member go through a background check. Shoot with some hood rats a few time at shooters or drive to Leeds on a weekend day with no one elsse there but you and your daughter and the $200 for having access to top notch ranges within 10 miles and its a blessing.
You can also work off dues if funds are short and you have the time. |
| I don't disagree on the facilities of CR-PC...top-notch and you can't beat the 24/7 indoor range. I was inches from joining before I found out we were pregnant early last year and my budget went on lock down. The membership guy I was talking to was urging me to get in the process before April to be grandfathered in under the old rate. $500 was apparently the solution to curb new memberships...as opposed to a membership cap. |
| They pro-rate your dues. I forget what their fiscal year is...April-March maybe. So if you join now, in April, you'll pay the full amount. The more months you get into the fiscal year, the cheaper it will get, but you'll be closer to the renewal date, so it's not like you're getting a discount...you're just getting what you paid for. Contact their membership person through the website...they're pretty responsive. |

I've been a member of Charlotte rifle pistol club since 1998, it was $175 initiation fee and $174 a year when I joined but you had to be invited and have a sponsor.
Now anyone can join but like others have said it's a $500 one time initiation fee and $204 per year membership. Great facilities, 300 yd rifle range, a 35 yd multi purpose combat range, 2 plinking ranges and a pistol range. Also have state of the art shot gun range with skeet and trap bays. Separate indoor range off of Independence blvd near 485 that you get 24 hr access to. Year starts April 1 and when you join like said above you are pro rated on your dues ($204) but the initiation is still $500. I run the Military steel plate match and it is open to the public $20 fee to shoot in it ($10 for members) and it is held 4 times a year. The next match is May 28. It's a fun match and pretty stress free compared to high power and other such matches. It has 5 to 6 stages depending on the particular match as I rotate side matches like M1 Garand, bolt gun or M1 carbine stages. Every target we shoot the entire day is steel!!!!!!! If you guys are interested I can post the courses of fire. I joined because I was spending at least as much money a year in gas driving to the Leeds range. |

I think I put in 8 hours of volunteer work last year (ranges need to be maintained somehow) and my dues for 2011 are $182. If you volunteer on about 12 days (about 3 hours each) they are probably close to nothing. I think there were 750 members at the end of 2008. There are 1200ish now. I am like Sergeant Schultz in that "I know nothing" about any plans. I would only suggest that if you thought of joining in the next year or two, now would be a good time. If this were to operate like a golf club one can expect a waiting list in the near future, or an increase in the initiation fee. So far, never a problem waiting. In fact, not even close on a weekend for me. I would imagine that if q wait is seen, then they might have to limit additional members just as a golf club would due based upon usage and as people resigned spots would open. The 2008 election did wonders for the club. |

Hi JG, I missed the last one but the first 3 I shot were a real blast (pardon the pun). Any chance of getting that barbecue back? Any thoughts on having a few bolt rifles to use were we pay perhaps $10+ the ammo? I seem to recall you might have some in good shape as you only use 1 bullet per target unlike the other humans! SC |
