Any word on if open carry will ever be allowed in SC? (anyone lobbying to get this passed?)

When it's allowed in almost every southern state, including both border states, and even places like California.

You would think South Carolina would allow open carry??

There has been some noise about that for a while, but don't get your hopes up.  If you want to open carry, move to Montana or go to the SC Criminal Justice Academy.

Or they could visit Arizona.

Seriously?  I don't know about NC, but I'm pretty certain that GA doesn't allow for open carry.

If you want open carry in SC so badly...

Contact your local state house representative and state senator and ask him to sponsor a bill.

It's not "someone else's job".

NC does allow it, so does GA, and so does TN.  Like the OP said, we're surrounded by states that have open carry.  I'd like to have the option to OC even though I would probably keep it concealed most of the time.

I'm sure that Grassroots Gun Rights would be happy to tackle that issue (with the help of every CWP holder in the state) but they've got some very large fish to fry.

The biggest as of late is an attempt by SLED to once again jack up the price of a CWP/Renewal to several hundred dollars. The bait and switch? A plan to allow CWP holders to "fast track" their renewals. Of course, you'd have to go to a special electronic fingerprinting service whose services SLED contracted without accepting competetive bids.

Grassroots contacted the governor's office about 2 weeks ago and was assured that this little bit of nonsense would not go forward. Sole-source bidding under most circumstances is illegal.

Not making stuff up here... NC and GA DO allow open carry. In fact, almost all southern states do.

Don't take my word for it. look at the chart below:

Yellow = Gold Star Open Carry State
Orange = Open Carry Friendly State
Green = Licensed Open Carry State
Red = Non Permissive Open Carry State
Gray = Rural Open Carry State

Per the chart, NC is gold star open carry. GA is licensed open carry.

And just for fun, TN is licensed, VA is licensed, AL is licensed. MS is friendly. LA is friendly.

SC is surrounded by open carry states.

I don't think open carry is the best option for all situations, but damn it would be nice to just strap on my PT92 if I was in a hurry and not have to worry about anybody seeing it.  Maybe someday.

biggest advantage is that if you accidentally have your shirt slipped up you don't have to worry about winding up like the guy at costco.
