Dad and I are going for a summer vacation, driving out to Vegas.

Anyone have any experience with this?  Trying to figure out how much time we will have to do this trip.

Leaving July 3rd and have to be back on July 11th.

Figure two days driving each way, nonstop, taking the 40.....Where are you staying? You can cut costs down by bunking in the car at a rest stop halfway through, if you want to get there ASAP..I've done this three times now.......Treasure Island has been advertising a special during the week––––I advise signing up for all interested hotel's email list and you'll get lots of deals in the emails...Las Vegas is very depressed right now––they've not rebounded AT ALL..........

Wow... that about 30-35 hours driving time each way, you'll get out there just in time to turn around and drive home.  Thought about Atlantic City instead?

I have made the trip three times now and the 1st two times regretted driving straight through. I would take three days each way,  Take I-40 to Memphis the 1st day, enjoy an evening there.  Next day get up really early and drive to Santa Fe (its a haul and a long day in the car).  Enjoy a late evening there and maybe stay until noon or so to see the town, its really GREAT!  Then finish the drive into Vegas. Spend a few days there, then turn around and hit a few places on the way back, first night..Sedona/red rock which is UNBELIEVABLE.  Second night maybe another night in Memphis or maybe nashville, third day... drive home.  You wont regret taking the time to see some of the country. Its a great drive!
btw...don't forget to see Hoover dam while in Vegas...Its well worth the time.

Enjoy your time with your Dad and don't forget to take tons of pics.  You probably won't get many chances in life to spend that kind of time with him.

Let us know how it goes.

We are going to take his Chevy 1500, might take the camper, but most likely, just hotel hop the way out.

We figured, been all over the north east and south east, so its time to head west and see more of the states.

I think we are going to do this every year we can, and go somewhere new.  Next year, I will take 2 weeks together instead of 1 and go longer.

My dad is retired, so he is off every day.

I will be bringing my laptop and camera to take pics on the way.

I can't wait.

Should be fun!

enjoy your trip!

I forgot to mention a stop on at the Grand Canyon. If you have not been, I would highly recommend a heli tour from the south rim just above flagstaff, its money well spent.

I'd think seriously about flying out. The driving won't allow you any time. I think you'll regret it, even though you'll be spending a ton of time with your dad.
