Hi All, I'm coming home for some R&R from the Sanbox in about a week. I'll be home the 10th through 25th (roughly). As I was leaving for this big mess that is an ARNG deployment, I know the state made some changes to what it takes to get your CCP. I heard conflicting bits of information on how long the class needed to be to qualify. Anyway, what I'm looking for is someone who knows of a good place, or person, to take the class from. I had heard through hearsay that if you're military or LEO you can have a condensed version of the class. Any truth to this? I'd want to take a class the weekend of the 18th (preferably knock it out in one day). Please school me in this and help me find someone to get this started. I'm looking for someone in either Jackson, Haywood or Buncombe counties ideally... but would be willing to drive for a good instructor and/or shortened class. Naturally I want everything to be within the limits of the law. Thanks! |

There is no shortened course for Mil, sorry.
The class is usually around 8 or 9 hours if following the state course example. About half the class is on NC law in use of deadly force and concealed carry law. The other half is firearms based safety and knowledge of firearms along with some focus on concealed carry training. (holsters, bags, clothing, etc) There is a range test that insures you have the basic skill set. If you find and take a shortened class you are only hurting yourself. There is a ton of dry info but it's what you really need to know in regards to NC law. If the person gives the certificate without the full training they are also opening themselves up to problems. If you don't find someone closer, I do the class in the Hickory / Lenoir area and will work with you to get things taken care of in your time frame. Best of luck and thank you for your service. |

FlatFrogFlyer, Thanks for the info, exactly what I was looking for. Perhaps you can answer one more question for me... I'll be leaving WNC for Iraq at the end of July and won't be back home until January-ish. I would like to submit my paperwork for approval so I can have my CCP as soon as I come home. The only thing I'm unclear on is whether or not there's a limit on how long the government will keep my CCP before I pick it up. I would rather have the forms processing while I'm deployed so it's ready once I come home, but I don't want anything to happen to my CCP if I don't pick it up in time. Is this an issue? Can I have a loved one pick it up for me (I'm assuming this is a "no")? I appreciate it! |

Explain your situation and I'd be surprised if he won't work with you to have it ready for you when you return. As for a loved one picking it up, I believe you have to sign so that probably won't be an option. As to a limit on how long they will hold it, there isn't any written law that I can find that lists that so it shouldn't be an issue. Just be sure that someone stateside knows of your arrangements so if you get held over your time they can keep the sheriff in the loop. |

Thanks FlatFrogFlyer, That makes a lot of sense. While I'm home I'll check with the Sheriff's office and see what they say. I was just wondering if there was any particular rule on it. I would definitely prefer to turn in the paperwork now and have it waiting on me once I'm home. I'll definitely keep you in mind while I'm home, especially if you're willing to work with my schedule. If you wouldn't mind IMing me your rates and general time frame... also if it would make any difference to have my lady come with me. |
