Is it legal in NC to carry concealed (like in a purse or pants pocket) a multi tool that has knife and saw blades?

Thanks

Is there a size limit to the blade I can carry?

I'm not sure if the pocket knife case law would apply. If it does, it has to be less than 4" overall when folded.

Copied from NC General Statutes:

§ 14‑269.  Carrying concealed weapons

This section does not apply to an ordinary pocket knife carried in a closed position. As used in this section, "ordinary pocket knife" means a small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse, that has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle, and that may not be opened by a throwing, explosive, or spring action.

Also, I have heard the 4" rule mentioned before...  Where in the statutes does it say4"?
Or is there some case law that defines max length?

Thanks,

I know this is slightly off topic, but the restrictive BS NC General Statute got me wondering...

What the hell kind of knife opens by explosion and where can I get one?

Case law defining a "pocket knife"

Thanks, NCPatrolAR..  You don't happen to have a link to that, or know the name in that case do you? I'm not doubting you, I just like to be able to substantiate my assertations when needed.

Robert Farb states in NC Crimes, ccw does not apply

"to an ordinary pocket knife in a closed position.  An "ordinary pocket knife" is defined as a small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse, which has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle and which may not be opened by throwing, explosive, or spring action.  "Small" has not been precisely defined by our appellate courts or legislature, but a pocket knife that was 4 1/2" in overall length was an "ordinary pocket knife" as defined by this statute (96 N.C App. 375).

Just about every Assistant DA carries a copy of the crimes manual to their table when they attend court.

I was wondering, are knives clipped to a pocket or belt with only the clip exposed or in a belt sheath still considered concealed?

Alot of it is going to depend on the situation which brought the person in contact with an officer, the subject, the officer, (if an arrest is made) the magistrate, the ADA, and later the judge.  One officer who can only see the clip might take some action and feel it is justified, another might not take any action.

It is hard to give absolutes.

The outcomes might be completely different for the thug who has a kitchen steak knife concealed in the small of back, compared to the hunter wearing a six inch sheath knife under his coat coming out of the woods heading towards his truck.  In both cases it would be CCW but the end result might be different.  Im not saying it is right / wrong or fair / unfair.  Just saying numerous factors might come into play for why one guy gets hooked for having one thing and another guy walks for something similar.

Automatic, spring assisted all that crap is just looking for trouble. I'm 99% positive
their illegal in just about any state. A good operator doesn't need that crap anyway
