Okay...I'll make this short and sweet [not at all like me!] since I just finished 11 hours of course time with Chris, Paul, and Steve of DefensiveConceptsNC.com.

I had a great time, as did everyone. And we got to keep our brass too! Or was that their way of policing the range?

Seriously, if you've not taken an instructional class on the defensive use of a handgun, TAKE ONE because , IMO, we don't know what we don't know until we deal with professionals. It's like golf...you can always get better and you might be doing quite a bit wrong that is easily corrected. And if you can take it outside, take it outside as far more possibilities are, well, possible.

Speaking as someone who had an attempted carjacking as well as an attempted robbery in the last 18 months, there's nothing pretty about drawing your weapon, nor praying that the other guy can't shoot anything but his foot! Any cowboy thinking "I can't wait until someone messes with me" is not high on the probability curve of surviving, imo. I got lucky in both cases that apparently no one was jacked-up on something and decided to challenge me when I decided to defended myself.

We never know what the odds might really be, if our guns will function properly when we need them the most, or what else is involved that we don't see. I have a hell of a lot more confidence, and knowledge, now that numerous scenarios were worked through. And in particular, what to do in scenarios where it's you getting shot first and how to fight to survive....with one arm...AND it's your weak arm non-dominant arm/hand! I took a lot home from the class.

Great class...great guys....highly recommended.

Who started using the term "weak hand" after I left? Someone is about to be stoned like a medieval heretic.

I am chocking for air on "medievil heretic". I'm more used to "What say ye to that you Saxon dog?"

That's the way I "heard it" but I can document a hearing impairment! LOL. It might have been "weak side" [is this getting better or worse?] Or maybe it was "dominant"...or possibly "dominatrix"? Yeah, that's the ticket.

Maybe you should stop while you are ahead.

In all seriousness, it was good to meet and train with you. Hope you got something usful out of the course.

Same here....I had a great time and took a lot back with me. I had never given a thought to the big difference between an indoor range and outdoors, unless it's a REALLY big indoor range.

Great drill at the end. Steve and Paul had 4 more after me and the truck had been down there with lights on to get it in. Money's worth? Most definitely!

Thanks,
Steve

I also attended the handgun class Saturday.  I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if my hands are a little chewed up from loading so much ammo and my thighs are sore (I guess it was from shooting from the 'Monica' position).

Great class and I highly recommend it to anyone who has some basic handgun skills and wants to learn more advanced skills and drills.

All of the instructors were great - very patient and always conscious of safety yet allowed us to be big boys with our weapons.

Chris is one funny SOB and keeps your attention (even though he is short on love for 1911's )

Can't wait for the carbine class next month...

Well if your not "that guy" then that only leaves one more person to fill the position..
On a more serious side, did that drop leg work for you? If you have any problems with it lemme know and I'll get you what you need..

thanks for following up Kris.

Actually - I ended up going with a cheap Galco leather belt holster. It turns out the class was really geared more towards fighting from concealed carry.

I definitely need to make some changes to my gear.  The mag holster didn't have any way to attach to a gun belt so I had to improvise.  Then I found that the flaps with velcro and/or clips got in the way of tactical reloads so I tried to bend them backwards out of the way all day.  I will be looking for different mag holsters in the future for CCW.  For SHTF, I am happpy to have the four mag holster.

I will use the drop leg holster at the carbine class, although if I had to do it again I would buy one without so many mag holsters on it - they get in the way and clutter the rig up a bit, especially when I want to use my non-dominate hand for reaching spare mags.

I may probably purchase a different chest rig for the class as well.  The DACH is a nice rig for SHTF, but maybe too much for the carbine class, especially when shooting from prone position (or so I am told by the instructors).

I am not unhappy at all with my gear - it is all part of the learning process for me.  If I decide I cannot use anything, I will just sell/trade it for something else - no problem.

I appreciate your help with all of this and still want to buy one of your sniper waist packs - maybe you can bring one for me to the class and I can avoid some shipping charges?

I may have to rethink my chest rig..
I was gonna wear a Warlord V4 Bravo with double mag shingles on the front..
and Quad pistol pouches on the pals on the side..
Do they think its too much because of the triple mag pouches keeping you up higher??
Actually what do they recommend?
something like a MAV??

I was in attendance Sat. as well.  Drove down from up north here for the day.

Had a great time - learned a lot.  It was my first time training. Thanks Chris, Paul and Steve for the great work, funny stuff that all had a point, etc.

I didn't even have the basics - I was following teaching and habits learned by just shooting.
Like reloading -  "What tha [heck] is all this down here?!!!!  Where is your work station?  Up here.  Right!  Keep working on it - get that thing running!!"

Not a paid endorsement, but if you've never trained with professionals to use your handgun, you NEED to RIGHT NOW.   Give 'em a call or email.

I will be doing this again.

Thanks for the good words guys.
We had a great time and the weather was great for it. Everyone did well and we hope you guys learned something.

As for the carbine class...
Bring what you would be using if you had to fight with your carbine.  Not like a contractor but like you hear a bump in the night and you grab a rifle or like you  have to un ass the car and you grab your rifle to fight to a better position.
The bottom line is most guys aren't carrying a chest rig with a thigh holster and 15 mags on a daily basis.
Train like you fight.

That is what is tearing at me..
I have a little jan sport "shower kit" bag That has 7 loaded 30rnders W/Q3131 and 2 pistol mags in it at all times in my truck..
If I have my pistol on me during the day it will be on my hip or easily accessible with maybe 1 mag in it 1 on me and 2 in the glove box....
My Rifle usually rides with me also
If I need my rifle it will be flapping around with a single point sling on my left side...
The jansport bag the exact opposite way of the Rifle on my right side...

If I was really gonna fight this is how it would be...

But.. OTOH I'd like to train with a Warlord and Dropleg...

Should I go to class all decked out like a wannabe commando like I want to?
Or go as the guy with a rifle slung to the left and a shower kit to his right??

After this learning experience I am going to be training on my own both ways..

So what should I do?

This makes perfect sense, although at what point do we start slowing down the class? I'm getting mixed signals from your sound advice and the course requirements (4 mags on the body 1 in the gun - if I'm reading it correctly).

I'm sure my noobness will be the limiting factor though, and not my gear selection.

If you really want to carry a Warlord and a dropleg, they will work just fine and if you have notice that the zombie horde is on the way then you'll have time to gear up.

It's not so much a fashion show.
Bring what ever you have that you're likely to use in the real world, just make sure you can carry 4 mags on your person and one in the weapon.
