House Gives Final OK To $562 Million Tax Package

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The state House is sending a $562 million revenue package to the Senate after giving final approval Thursday morning.

The package was approved 63-54. (RIGHT ALONG PARTY LINES) It includes another delay in taking a half-cent sales tax and an income tax increase off the books.

House Democrats pushed through the two-year revenue package because they say North Carolina state government still didn't have enough recurring tax money to keep up with the needs of a fast-growing state. The House gave the plan initial approval Wednesday.

Republicans argued that lawmakers were breaking their promises to let the two taxes expire. Both taxes initially passed in 2001 during the height of the recession and were supposed to expire in 2003, but the House extended them until this year.

Democratic leaders say they separated the tax package from their spending proposal approved by the Senate, because budget-writers can't wait to know how much money they'll have.

the "temporary" sales and income tax hike have been going on for 5 years now.  of course the 1/2% sales tax hike is terribly regressive and if remove the temporary 1/2% income tax hike, only the rich will get that tax cut.

It's a tax, what did you expect?

Revenue, it's all about revenue. Unlike you and me, when the politicos need more cash for their favorite 'programs' they just take it.

All politicians these days strike me a stupid phuckers and/or greedy mofos. Lord, it's time to flush the toilet.
