My employer may want to move me from Colorado to Cary, N.C. Can anyone give me details on the area? Availability of housing, cost of living, gun laws, etc? Thanks . |
| Have you ever seen the Truman Show? Much of Cary reminds me of the town in that movie. Very upperclass, picture-perfect planned communities. Housing costs are very high. It is a suburb of Raleigh that has grown up way too fast in my opinion. It is a much more liberal area than the rest of the state. It would be a nice place for families, I think. Lots of shopping and restaraunts. Raleigh is close by and is a good sized city. As far as shooting, there are a couple places nearby with indoor ranges (Davi's Guns and PSHDC) but I wasn't aware of any public outdoor ranges when I was in school at NCSU in Raleigh. If you have to live in the Research Triangle area, Cary would definitely be one of the better places. If you would rather live in a little more rural area, you may look at Apex. North Carolina in general is a nice place to live. If you move, let us know! |

C.A.R.Y.... The Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. (This from a relocate yankee) Cary is a pretty nice place, and in the area it has pretty decent schools. Homes are relatively expensive. It has an incredibly high population density of educated people, most have post-secondary degrees, but as a result you'll be surrounded by "enlightened folk." As of about 15 years ago it was nothing but farmland, now it's one of the largest urban areas in the state. (I believe 3rd) It grew because it's a roughly central location to UNC-CH, Duke, and NCSU, with easy access to the highway and it's very close to Research Triange Park. Gun wise, Cary is relatively anti-gun, and the population as a whole is pretty liberal. Jennifer Weiss the state representative for Cary is one of the more virulently anti-gun people in the state house. However, it is in Wake county which is relatively gun friendly. Out of Durham, Orange, and Wake, it's by far the most reasonable to obtain a pistol permit. No signed affidavits required, just a ten day wait. It's also very close and easily accessable (read:easy commute) to a lot of smaller more rural communities as well as the State Capitol, Raleigh. Apex, is right next door, and home to Young guns, home of an enormous prick of a sales guy John, and an extremely nice owner Randy. Apex also has more reasonable home prices. You will be very close to the Durham County Wildlife Club, which is where I shoot. PDHSC is just up the road in Garner, and a great gun shop/range. You would be roughly in the center of the state, and equidistant from the ocean and the mountains, each of which is only a couple of hours drive. To be honest, I'd just as soon live there, than Carrboro if it were close enough for me to commute to school, but if you move here you'll find out more about that. |
