Hey guys the wife is going to the trans-Siberian concert on the 26th of December and it is at the Scottrade center. I am not from the area and with all of the stuff happening I am questioning her going (will be going with family..all women) but that doesn't help my feeling towards the situation. Could you guys give me a run down of the area and your thoughts to how safe the area is? We have looked and there are quite a few parking garages close but if you could recommend any it would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks

We go down there all the time for Blues games.  I never Carry except a knife due to the wands..  The wands go off on my knife and I haven't had a problem.  I park in the garage on the north east corner of Clark and S Tucker, its a block east of Scott trade, google maps will have it labeled as Maurizio's Pizza which is on the street level.  I have never had any problems for hockey games or when I've been down there during the day, When I used to live in west county and would take the metrolink down to the games.  I have never had any problems or seen any....knock on  wood.

Downtown is not as dangerous as GD or the more "rural" population would have you believe. Yes, St. Louis has rough areas but downtown isn't one of them. Still, it's not like out the 'burbs. Point is, keep your head on a swivel but don't worry like she's going into the ghetto or some such.

Maurizio's is closed.

Might still show up on google though.

Its not roaming gangs that you gotta look or for in down town, south town or north town.  It's the random "get whitey" groups that are looking to prove something that is what is my concern as that is getting more and more frequent post Mike Brown.

Just head down 40/64 get off on Clarke and park in the parking garage that's just west of Scott Trade, it's connected to the arena so you just walk through.  get their semi early as you don't want it to fill up on you and then have to park off site.

What do you mean by "The wands go off on my knife and I haven't had a problem."?  Do you then show it to them and they let you in anyway?

On the other hand, I got wanded at a Blues game and had to take my knife back to the car.
It is NOT a big knife. (A leek.)

For years now I have carried my Leek clipped to the top part of my zipper under my belt buckle when pocked carry may set something off, Rarely do I get wonded there.

They don't even look at it. They aren't look for knives in purses either. Just checking main compartment for guns. That's my back up plan is to put it in my girlfriends bag and try again.

I go to Scottrade Center all the time since I have Blues season tickets.  The area really isn't all that bad, but I make sure to be aware of my surroundings anyway.

At least for hockey games, they wand most people now, but not everyone.  How thorough the wanding is depends on who is doing it.  Most only check around your waist and chest.  I did have one guy once that wanded all the way down to my ankles, but that is rare.  One guy once made me take my car keys out of my pocket to show him that it was my car keys that set off his wand, but usually I am just waved through with keys in one pocket and a bunch of change in the other.

Once, a few years ago, one of the security people saw my pocket knife since I had it clipped to my pocket.  He took it from me until the end of the game.  When I went back at the end of the game to get it from him, he had an entire cargo pocket full of pocket knives.  I made sure I avoid the line he is closest to now.

I guess the short version is that the security to get into the building is hit and miss and it really just depends on who is doing it.

The garage attached to Scottrade Center will be the most expensive ($20 for a Blues game).  Other garages are cheaper.  I've used the one at Tucker & Clark before.  I also frequently use another one a little further away - just across Market St. from Union Station.
