Hi all, I figured since I've lived here since 2004, I might as well give deer hunting a try.  I was intending to get a temporary permit to hunt and go with a buddy of mine who is licensed to hunt.  We want to go out during firearms season this year.  I did some research on the DoC website and had a question concerning hunting with firearms.  If I understand the info right, there is a 10 round limit for semi-auto weapons.  I have two rifles I am considering using; my M1 Garand and my M16 A2 clone.  The M1 is within the limit since it only holds 8 rounds, but all I have for my AR is 30 round USGI mags.  If I hunt with the AR, can I use these mags and just keep them loaded with the legal number of rounds, or do I need to get 10 rounders for it?

You have two options. One is to buy a 10 round magazine. The second is to put a block into the magazine so it cannot hold more then ten rounds. Use of a magazine that holds more then ten rounds is grounds for a ticket from an agent.

I believe with 10 round limit, it's 10 rounds total----9 in mag with 1 in chamber. Looking thru the Wildlife code book now to be sure.

I purchased 2, 5-round AR15 mags to hunt with. I've not used more than 2 shots yet on a deer with my bolt guns, I don't expect any worse with the AR.

OK, I looked through 2 wildlife code books, and nothing about a rifle's capacity, BUT they do talk about a shotgun being limited to only 3 rounds total(1 in chamber and 2 max in tube with blockage rod if tube holds more than 3 shells) for hunting birds, but nothing about rounds total for deer. I'm confused now.

Protip on blocking your mag.
Use legos instead of trying to whittle a block of wood to the height you want.

What is prohibited...
Self-Loading firearms with capacity of more than 11 cartridges in magazine and chamber combined.

Just double checked the 2014 Fall Deer and Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet given free everywhere you buy tags and licenses.

Personally, I like the less obtrusive 10 round mags for hunting.

You are limited to 11 rounds TOTAL. 1 in the chamber, & 10 in the magazine. I've never emptied the mag in my bolt gun, which holds 4 rounds. YMMV!

Brian

P.S., I use 1" X 3" wood to block AR mags. B.

Thanks for the advice folks; I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap 10 rounder if I decide to use my AR, thanks

OP, I have a suggestion based on my expierence in the deer woods. I have shot a few deer with .223/5.56, while some have dropped in their tracks and some have ran. What I have noticed as the biggest problem with AR's is shots under 100 yards seem to leave to small of a hole to allow sufficient external bleeding making tracking difficult in the woods. I have used 64g Winchester power points for all the deer shot with my ARs. All shots were in the heart or at least nicked a ventricle. You may be better served with your Garand. Good luck, and welcome to deer hunting

This year will be my second year deer hunting, and I've got my tags!  Hopefully, I'll get a deer this year for the first time.

Last year I saw one doe for about 2 seconds between trees at about 200 yd, and one 2-point buck at about 75 yd.  The buck knew he wasn't legal because he would take a couple of steps, stop, look up, and take another couple of steps and kept giving me a perfect profile.  Watched the bastard for about five minutes--I think he flipped me the hoof.

I have a load worked up for my .30-06 for this season and I'm itching to make contact with something--maybe that dude has more points this time so I can get my revenge!

Yah, don't push that. 10 in the gun as a whole. Not 1 loaded and ten more in the mag.

I don't think I will be getting a tag this year, I just don't think I'll have the time... and that should guarantee I will see lots of them EVERYWHERE

I bought a few 10 round PMags off of Larue's site (IIRC) a year or so back for $15/ea.  I like the 10 rounders for bench shooting/load testing as well as hunting.

Get a copy of the annual regulations book for deer and Turkey hunting, and the booklet of overall hunting regulations.  Study them and make certain you understand all of it, then double check for the area you hunt.
If you get crossways with an agent , you have no one to blame but yourself, and it is clear from your first post you have a considerable amount of homework to complete before heading out.
