A friend has a Mac90, and apparently it's messing up. It hadn't been fired in a long time, and just two boxes into a shooting session it did the following;

1. Started smoking where the receiver meets the butt stock

2. Magazine got very loose, to the point that you can see and hear it rattle from side to side.

How could it smoke behind the receiver? I haven't seen/held it, so I don't know anything more about it yet.

Hard to tell without actually seeing it.

Smoking is common if one rapid fires an AK and it is over oiled.

Magazine wobble sounds like the magazine is not seated properly for some reason. Look for a magazine, bent magazine catch, or dented receiver.

That area normally doesn't get very hot.. I suspect you'd find a very well oiled fcg if you took the top cover off.  Mine has got hot enough to set the front stock on fire

Mag wobble isn't a big deal unless you get ftf probs.   It's very common.  It's not an AR. Mine wobble like a shit faced bum and it never ftf.

Shoot the crap out of it

So it's likely just over-oiled (inside the receiver), and the smoke works its way to the back? I'll have him check on that.

Next two questions;

1. He wants to replace the thumbhole stock with a more standard AK type; is that easy to do/easy to find?

2. He wants to put a scope on it. What type of mount would you suggest, or what types are available?

Thanks for the help.

Depends on what era of MAK-90 he has.  I have one from the previous ban era and the unique receiver required me to go to HERE to find what I needed

I have no idea how old it is, so I'll pass that link along to him. Thank you for the help.

If it has a side rail, Midwest Industries makes some rather nice scope mounts.

You'll need to know if it's a milled or stamped receiver.

I have one of the milled receivers and when it was imported, they lopped off a corner of the receiver to prevent a standard stock from being used later.  The link from nturavrgcop above is the only place that has the old school stock that will work.

for the scope mount, Im tossing around the idea of geting one of the gas tubes with the rail buit in.  Its not stellar in the accuracy dept anyway so a RD would be good enough.

money, time... that kind of crap. ugh

The older style receivers I'm talking about will be referred to as an angled trunion/receiver.

If it's a normal stamped receiver (squared off on the rear and not a "slant cut"), swapping furniture is pretty straightforward. He'll likely have to shave a cunthair's worth of material from the stock where it goes into the receiver, due to the MAK90's 1.5mm receiver thickness (normal AKs have 1mm receivers and all the aftermarket furniture is made to fit those 1mm receivers). The other issue is legality. In order to comply with 922(r) on a MAK90 (well, the easiest way anyway), the stock, pistol grip, handguards, and FCG all need to be US-made. When I converted mine, I used a K-Var stock and handguards, a Hogue pistol grip, and TAPCO G2 double-hook trigger group. Simple as that. All kinds of Youtube vids out there to show how to swap the trigger components.

See ya on MWT, man!

That's a handy little bit of info to have. Thanks.

(I was just on MWT before coming here).
