My house was built in two steps, original in 1995 and add on in 2006. The new part has an A/C furnace unit, that works very well, but the original part has a heat pump and doesn't match the other unit.

My son and I heard a talk radio show about HVAC, and they were talking about having enough cold air return. We looked around in the older part of the house, and there are only two return vents. One is in the living room wall, and the other is near the ceiling in my sons room. After that we looked at the unit in the hall, and though it has the galvanized thing on top there are no ducts going to it. It pulls through the living room vent, and through the space between studs in the wall between it and my sons room.

Could this have been designed this way, or did they just quit half way through? The registers are on the floor, and most of the duct down in the crawl space 6 or 7" flex.

Try running it with the door open and see if it makes a difference.

They're using the closet as a plenum, not inherently a bad thing and plenums are used often, especially in commercial buildings.

I doubt the return air path is your problem.

So it's a legitimate method; that's good to know. We have that door open right now, but it's really not that hot out yet. (Windows are open and fans are going). I'm due to change the filters now, before it gets hot and I have the A/C on all the time.

Thanks for the replies.
