Does anyone know of any places that do Rockwell C hardness testing that wouldn't freak out if I brought in a receiver to get checked?

I don't know of any but I would caution to be sure they can test while you wait.  Unless of course they have a ffl.

I'm not sure where you're located, but if you're in St. Louis, try these guys. Or maybe call them and ask for someone local if you're not in St. Louis.

Contact Curtis at AKbuilder, he has a C tester.
I have them in my office here about 5 of them a short walk away.
But I can't bring a receiver on site....

I would say that as well, but they are pretty cautious about letting any Joe Blow in there. There's a reason the building is completely unmarked. My buddy is one of their machinists and I get to drop in from time to time to buy parts or whatever, and I always get the funny feeling like they don't get outsiders in there too often.

Well I would just ship it to him, so hopefully that would get me around any awkwardness.

Ah, gotcha. That seems like a lot of trouble, though, just for a hardness check. Are there no machine shops nearby that you could just call and ask?

Everywhere I've asked have freaked out when I told them it was a receiver. There are a few others I'm going to try tomorrow.

Ya know, why not just try answering that question with simply "It's a small, heat-treated piece of sheetmetal" and see if that works?

Well, it's an M1 Garand receiver, so I think they'll notice right away what it is.

Contact Curtis, he is good people, let him know on the phone what you need and he will likely help all he can.
He'll let you know when is good to come by.

This is if you are in the KC area.
if it is just a receiver for an M1 with no barrel attached (i.e. small)
I could probably do it but may take a while. If I get caught doing it (bringing a receiver on site) then you get to pay my house payment for my trouble... until I get a different job.

Keep in mind that the Rockwell C will leave a pretty decent size indent in the surface.
that receiver won't be particularly hard it will likely be in the 35-45 zone tops. probably in the 30-40 zone.
Using Superficial 15N or 15T would be less damaging.

Curtis did get back to me and said that he would do it, but I would have to drive to KC (I'm in JC) which would be a task. I'm trying to contact another gunsmith who makes his own receivers and does his own testing and see if he'll do it for me.
