We skipped it this weekend, anyone go? Prices? Was it busy? Any good stuff?

I went for a little bit, lots of people.  Prices....meh.  I don't go to buy guns anymore, mostly accessories, and maybe a used optic, but I didn't find any that I thought was worth the money.  I did spy a nice counterfeit Leupy Mk4.

I just checked in to see if it was worth attending. Based on the past few times I've attended my decision comes down to deciding if I want to pay money to people watch.

I would like to see a Sig Sauer SSG 3000. Wondering if there's any  chance someone had one there.

I went Saturday morning, took my 3 year old son with (his first gun show...brings a tear to my eye), who then promptly fell asleep in his little stroller.  Gun prices seemed high, .22 ammo was very high ( picked up a box of 325 federal match at Bass Pro last week for 20, saw the same box at the show for 50), but I did pick up 2 boxes of 147 grain PDX in 9mm for 19 a box, while Walmart has the same for 22.

Also, .223 Wolf was about 6 a box, not bad.  All in all, better, but it seemed to me that there wasn't as many tables this time.  At the back of the East wing of the E-plex, it seemed that there was a couple of rows of booths missing.  The last time I went, it was literally wall to wall.  And I'm guessing that I didn't win the 10-22 either...

I know several dealers who have pulled the plug on  gun shows. There's no money in it anymore, everyone is showing up trying to sell. One guy price shopped to make sure he had the best prices, he sold 5 guns in two days, the booths cost him  more than he made.

I displayed at the Springfield show. It was the best one in quite a while there. Prices were high overall, but there was a lot of stuff around. There were some pretty good deals. I saw one guy selling new Glocks at $499 and another had stripped AR lowers at $90.

I expect the March show to be very busy with people running around with tax refunds.

I WHOLLY disagree with this statement. There is plenty of money in gun shows but you can't have just one table with old stale inventory that no one wants and sit back like and old grouch and expect to make money. That's what most dealers do!

You wanna make money at gun shows? Be FRIENDLY, have relevant inventory at good prices, talk with people...even those who tell you they are just looking.

There is TONS of business at gun shows you just have to go get it...it doesn't just come to you.

Agreed with this wholeheartedly. Dont be a dick, and keep your prices NORMAL...and you will make money. Its been proven at EVERY show that we go to.

The dealer in reference is in Neosho, normally has at least 6 tables sometimes more, always some of the best prices and always has good inventory. I've worked shows with him before and he knows what he's doing. There are a lot of tire kickers at the shows, not as many spending money. At the same time, you can't cut your own throat just to sell a gun.

No one said anything about cutting throats to sell a gun. However, you can't tell me that there isn't money at gun shows when we have had a record month at gun shows that blows away all shows even during the panic! If there isn't "money in gun shows" how do you explain that?

So therefore let me ask you this...if he has soooo much inventory and great prices and he is going good shows like Springfield, KCI, St Charles, etc other RK Shows how is he not making money??? What is he doing "wrong"? Just something to think about...also I would DEFINITELY not categorize the entire gun show industry based on your "friend". I am at all the large MO gun shows and talking with all the dealers and they don't seem to share you sentiment either.

Might want to re-think that generalization of the industry.

Next gun show let's all just have a Springfield HTF get together at the Golden Corral around the corner and just pretend that we went.

I never go anymore, I'd rather spend the $10 admission on a mediocre buffet.

Whoa...  Ease up there... Not trying to piss in your koolade,  I've spent a little time at gun shows lately myself, and apparently we aren't going to the same shows, cause many of the dealers I know have the same complaints. It's great that you're doing well, I wish you the best of luck... But  after spending money for diesel, food, hotels, and tables, plus paying employees, he has to sell 75 guns just to break even and at least 100 to make it worth while. You may be doing better, if you are, that's great! Keep it up! But he takes 250+ guns to a normal show and has been selling about 60 - 80, close enough that it's just not worth the time and effort. That's all I'm saying.

So let me get this right.

Neosho to Springfied is approximately 80 miles one way. That's 160 miles round trip. At 10 miles per gallon pulling a trailer that is 16 gallons of gas. At $4 per gallon that is $64 for fuel. Pad that a little for running around that is $75 in fuel.

Fuel - $75

Tables - $366 ($61 per table (prepaid) x 6 tables)

Hotel - $150 for two nights (use priceline it's great!)

Food - $120 per weekend per employee. He should only have 1 other than himself so that would be a total of $240

Breakfast Saturday/Sunday is at the hotel FREE

Lunch Saturday/Sunday - $60 ($30 each day)

Dinner Friday / Saturday - $60 ($30 each day)

Employee Pay - ?? Not sure what he pays them

Without employee pay you are only at $831 for the weekend (and that is being generous). Now let's say he has $250 in employee cost. That brings the cost for the weekend to $1081.

You said he has to sell 75 guns to break even. So that means he is only making $14.41 per gun ??? ($1081 / 75)

You see the problem here right?? Your claims of "it's too expensive to do shows" and "there's nothing in it" is simply not true.

Using your own info you listed here if he is selling between 60-80 guns per weekend show there is NO WAY he is not making a killing as I'm sure he is making over $14.41 per gun.

Just trying to point out the logical flaw in the information that is being presented.

Your info is great, however, assuming he makes $20 per gun which is about average because guns aren't that profitable, especially at a gun show, at 60 guns that $1200. If his expenses are $1000 (which is pretty close) that means he's making about $200 a weekend after all is said and done. If he stays at his shot and sells 20 guns, (he will sell about 30) he can make about 50% more per gun, so he does better, and thats why he's staying home. We don't go either simply because I can make more off of my website than off of a show.
