KC man among Kenya mall attackers

At least 68 killed in siege at upscale shopping center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —CNN has released the names of nine people it says were involved in the attack on an upscale shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya -- and it said one of the nine is from Kansas City.

At least 68 people were killed when a group of al-Shabaab extremists stormed the four-story mall, throwing grenades and firing shots at civilians. An unknown number of hostages were still inside Sunday.

Kenyan security forces have been launching an assault to try to end the standoff.

CNN reported that three of the men involved in the assault have lived in the United States, including Gen Mustafe Noorudiin, 27, who it said lived in Kansas City, Mo. The other two people who have lived in the U.S. were from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in Minnesota, according to the report.

Other people on the list were from London, Finland, Canada and Somalia. Only one of the men named in CNN's report is from Kenya.

CNN said it obtained the information from sources inside al-Shabaab. The U.S. State Department has not confirmed any of the names.

State Department Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Harf issued the following statement about the attack:

"The United States condemns in the strongest terms the despicable massacre of innocent men, women and children at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those killed and injured in this cowardly act and we extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones."

"The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is closely monitoring the situation, which is still unfolding, and we have offered our full support to the Kenyan authorities.  We commend the courageous response by Kenyan security personnel and first responders, governmental and non-governmental, who have stepped forward to help their fellow Kenyan citizens and citizens of other countries affected by this senseless violence."

"We stand together with Kenya in our resolve to confront and defeat violent extremism.  We stand ready to assist Kenya in finding those who did this and in holding them accountable."

Al-Shabaab is a Somalian group that was designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government in March 2008. It is seeking to turn Somalia into a fundamentalist Islamic state, according to the Council on Foreign Relations, which published a backgrounder on the group in July.

What a coincidence, one of the bad guys in Washington is from Kenya.  I wonder if they'd be amenable to an exchange?
