Many schools of thought; here's my .02 worth...

I build my own for myself, family and dept.  I choose things that will be needed, and that I can actually use.  There are those who subscribe to the school of thought to carry more advanced tools in the event someone on scene will know how to use them; I do not.

My kit goes from standard boo-boo (including Hello Kitty bandaids to cut down on whining at the range - most don't want to continue their quals with a pink bandaid on) up to GSK's.

I also made sure to get training for myself, family and officers on not only 1st Aid but how to use the kits they have.  We get ours from Red Cross and our FD.

I don't for the most part like pre-packaged kits because they make general assumptions about what I will need.

YMMV.

Makes 100% sense to me.  Everything in the kit I posted a link to above is at my skill level and knowledge on how to use and is for serious injury with arterial bleeding.  I don't carry a field surgical kit as I am no surgeon and will hope a butterly suture or compression bandage will do,  I do carry the same first aid kit I had back in boy scouts, just with new stuff in it.  It amazes me how many folks buy a kit and toss it in their trunk and then are surprised when things are expired or useless when they need them.

First Aid training is essential.  Knowing how to handle serious injuries until properly trained professionals can get on scene is critical as is knowning that quick clot for a minor abrasion is a waste of resources - unless it happens to be all you have.

thanks but i have some health funds that i am going to loose if i don't burn them and i can get ifak/trauma stuff with them.  i got my 2 larue kits that way actually.  i was thinking of adding something for airway (NPA tube and/or decompression needle) to my trama kit.  then get a basic FAK for the bob with things like bandaids, extra bandages, tape, splint, etc.  if i get the needle or NPA i will talk to the trainers at work on how to use them.

I have sealed NPA tubes for a dollar.

Complete minor first aid kits vacuum sealed and shrink wrapped for 5 dollars.

2014 Decompression Needles for 10 dollars each Sealed.

And the list goes on.

I use:

http://www.itstactical.com/store/medical/its-eta-trauma-kit-fatboy/

Or rather I have, hope to never use it on myself or anyone.  They don't come with tourniquets but you can buy them separately, they also sell pouches if you want it all laid out and not have to dig through the bag when you need to use it.
