How should you document the firearms you own? What is the best proof in case of theft or use in self defense?

I have some that were gifts from family and some that I purchased and filled out the 4473's for.

I've thought about pictures of serial numbers and descriptions printed out and kept in a safe location.

Thats what I did and emailed it to myself that way even if my comp is stolen then there is still a record.

I have a small bound book that I list all guns on hand with ser# of guns on hand , traded and sold and to whom. Sold and traded is a very very small list. Its just a small ledger book I think my wife got at wal-fart. also keep a list of all my favorite loads in it too

I spent a Saturday writing make, model & serial # on a piece of copy paper with a sharpie. Then took a digital pic of each one with the paper in the pic. I keep a copy on my home PC & a copy on a thumb drive at the office.

Reminds me, it's time to update it.

I know the Jeff City police dept. has inventory forms. Maybe other dept's have the same thing?

I like to take a picture of my p3#1s right next to the firearm serial number. That way there is no question that the firearm belongs to me.

P.S. if you let me take your firearm in the bathroom then chances are it's mine too.
