| My reason for posting was to see if this time period was normal for this area since I'm not from here. Second I haven't had any gunsmithing done in many years. I do appreciate the deal I got as I mentioned in another post so I didn't mention what smith I was dealing with in case I was way off base here. I should have talked with Bassakwards and I didn't. |

Hah !!
I missed out on the fun. Last guy called and wanted to know if he could send some work my way. I said sure, but let me candid so there's no misunderstandings. I have a two pistol limit and currently have one in house. Gunsmithing isn't my full time business, it's my hobby. You might have your pistol turned in a day, a week, a month or maybe a year. The one pistol in house now has been here over a year. It's a ground up custom and the guy is a friend of my son's. He is most patient and we speak almost weekly. The work isn't always perfect and I don't charge a lot. If this is acceptable let me know. Never heard from the guy again.
Sadly enough. Gunsmiths are getting to be fewer and farther between. While I know my way around a 1911 pretty well I'm by no means a schooled gunsmith. Closest we have in central Missouri to a working smith accepting work is in Rolla or Silex, Missouri. ARs are like LEGOs. Plenty of guys on here can help you out as I'm sure you know by now. |

Two gun limit is my own.
No I don't have an FFL. FFL transfers are done through a shop in town. As long as smithing stays my hobby and my main income is something else. According to ATF regulations I'm fine. Working on a " friends gun " occasionally is fine by ATF regs, especially see'ins a transfer is made via ATF form 4473. Form 4473 logged by FFL is all I need. Jason uses a bound log book from Brownells I believe. The only guns he wants on his logs these days are South Fork Arms\Perkins Custom LLC. I won't do but four to six guns a year including my guns. If a guy wants sights installed. I have him send slide only unless he wants both slide and receiver finished together. My gross income last year from "smiffing" was right at $2,000. Which netted me a loss of $2,500. I cherry pick work and won't work with anyone in a hurry. Don't mind follow up calls. Communication. That's the biggest thing with people. Folks understand when a man is busy and have little patience for voice mail. |
