[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Which .308 (Page 1 of 2)

I have been reading about everything I can find on the M1a, AR10, FNARs, etc. I like nostalgia, but I am not sold on it. The M1a is just where I started my search.
I am thinking of getting a semi-auto .308, I have to sell the bolt gun. (Remmy SPS Varmint.) I want 1" or better MOA at 100 yds, I would like to run it out to 800 to 1,000 m at Benchrest some time. I have a very nice Luppy 50 mil scope to put on it. Possibly take a deer or two. Of course, I just want to go shoot it! (Blow stuff up as my wife says! This would give me a shot gun for the wife, AR 15 for the kid and xxx for me. Kind of have the gambit covered. If you know what I mean. Price range is not too wide, but wide enough to get a nice weapon. Upper end $1500ish, maybe $1,700. Of course less $$$ is always better if I can get what I want! Now, I know there are a BUNCH of choices out there, but what say you? What would you get? |
| For the money, the DPMS .308's are tough to beat. They are very accurate, reliable, and they use P-mags, which is a big plus to me. There is a wide range of barrel lengths and profiles available, and they can use any AR15 stocks and triggers. M1A's can be made just about as accurate, but it's harder and pricier to do so. |
|
When LaRue Tactical is an option, LaRue Tactical is the answer. If you happen to live on the east side of the state, I would be happy to bring you mine and let you run some rounds through it. If you live on the west side, there are several over there who have had the chance to shoot it last summer... the accuracy is hard to beat. I shot it last week in Oklahoma. We put 500 rounds through it without cleaning it and it stayed sub-moa the whole time... same ragged hole. |

I was close to pulling the trigger on a DPMS, but when I started really breaking down the options per $'s I went with a RRA LAR-8. That said I like DPMS's magazine options better. The RRA takes FAL mags, which there are a metric F-ton of floating around, but if you want something besides a steel 20 rounder, you're gonna have to give up your firstborn. Anyhow, I thought a lot about what kind of setup I was wanting and went with the 16" lighter contour barrel. Generally I'm a fan of big heavy bull barrels, but I wanted this rifle for a 4wheeler/deer hunting type setup and didn't want all the weight. They are guarenteed to shoot 1.5 MOA and I read that several guys were getting sub MOA. I had a range report in the Industry section, but it looks like it got archived. Anyhow, I don't remember the exact #'s, but I think that I had a 5 shot 100 yard .75" group with Federal Match ammo, IIRC. |

Quoted: Yes, I forgot to mention that option. If you take the amount of money you said you wanted to spend, go to a local casino and bet red or black one time at the roulette wheel (and win), you will just barely have enough to buy a Larue Tactical rifle. Maybe you're right. Not everyone is cut out to drive a Corvette. |

I hear nice things about the .308 from CMMG. Yeah, just ask Eaze, he's a huge fan... Also, tagged for interest. yup.....at $1499 with a PRS stock on the back from CDNN, I like it. Best groupings have been with 168gr FGMM ammo at .59x" at 100yards. Seemed to run perfect until I added the silencer, then I had issues, I added $147.75 to the buffer system (Slash heavy buffer and so on), and no she runs like a sewing machine and is still as accurate as I am good looking! i would love another OBR in 762....but Im afraid the following divorce would be MUCH more expensive. Sure would look nice next to my 556 OBR tho. |

Thanks Guys...
Luppy = Luepold Scope (sp) Remmy = Remington sorry for the limited acronyms. Either the cool-aide is really good or you guys are saying take my gambling self to one of the local casinos double up my $1500 and buy a Larue Tactical OR Buy a DPMS AR10 as it will give me the groups I want. Well that is a plan. Maybe I need to save longer? At some point I am going to make one of the outings and get to see some of y'alls stuff.
OH CRAP the end of Slap Shot with Paul Newman is on! It is so hard to type and laugh! |

I'd pay money for side by side results against LaRue's competition. No hate intended or warranted. I sure would've enjoyed the opportunity to shoot Blitz308's stealth but junior had it tied up for the days we had it. For what we ran it struggled to maintain moa at 100 and easily held sub moa at 600. My bolt rifle performs same way because we load for distance, not hand gun range. Still curiosity says it would be neat to compare against DPMS and Armalite. ![]()

That is very common with long, low-drag match bullets. The bullets don't "go to sleep" sometimes until well past 200yds. |

I love my m1a because its just a classy rifle. I dont own an ar10 but have shot a few. Ar 10 is easier to customize and costs less to do so. A note on my m1a is that SA didnt make in spec recievers so sometimes a custom scope mount has to be made....that cost me some $$ after finding out the hard way had buying a mount that didnt work the first time. Not sure if thats been corrected or not. I have the correct mount now but really prefer open sights with it.
The m1a ia a 1"@ 100yds with hunting ammo. My rem 700 sps 20" out shoots it all day long. One day Ill get a AR10 too. |

I'd call up GA Precision and pick up a GAP-10 before I bought a Larue, too much proprietary koolaid with OBR, and I'd rather support our state. Also I find it a little annoying that Larue keeps the source of their barrels secret, I imagine its because they are from a manufacture that is reguarded as a "cheaper" source. But with proper sorting/ gaging you can get match grade tubes from most places. I'm not saying that they are not accurate and that places like green mountain couldn't put out good tubes, but all the secrecy leads me down that road. And I don't feel like paying for "free" bottle openers or BBQ rub.
Personally I went with the "build-it-yourself" option. My rifle is an SI Defense matched upper and lower, dpms small parts with a Geissele match 2-stage, SI SASS barrel, Miculek Comp, and 13.2" TRX. The SI upper and lower were so well matched that you could turn the set upside down and the stripped upper wouldn't fall out without the pins installed. It's been sub-moa with handloads 155 SMKs in Lake City brass. And I just picked up a new ATLAS bipod! got to the point where I need at least 3 harris so I decided it was time to upgrade to one for all of them. NPT |

Three tours Iraq, Fort Benning Sniper School credentialed and competitor at last years 10th International Sniper Competition at Fort Benning, Ga. Most days he's just Jonathan except when he gets to inflating that ego of his. After it gets so big it won't fit through the door he's Super Sniper. Soon to be out if the Army for good. Currently fielding offers from defense contractors for deployment to probably Afghanistan, maybe Iraq. Jonathan was there to see the two operators who won last years competition. It was a lot more the operators who won than LaRue's rifle. That's Jonathan's quote, not mine. I do appreciate fine equipment and would spend my dollar in Texas over central Missouri. |

DPMS, for the most part, has been pretty good rifles for the money in my experience.
Wouldn't mind getting together if someone wants to put together a range day in March when I get back from AF. I have a Springfield M1 Super Match and a JP LRP07H that should be built in a few weeks.

That would be great Chad, even better if we could get some other makes of rifles there like Chainsaw1 has. Nobody makes a sexier looking rifle than LaRue. I'm curious how it stacks up to the competition. Sure a few rifles from central Missouri will be there. More interested in seeing at least one DPMS show up. |

I think your original post speaks for itself... and it's spelled "conscientiously..." Guess I forgot the spell check, better call the word cops! I guess my grammar and spelling suffer when I'm called ignorant and stupid. I suppose I'm in real trouble now, I'm pissing off "the pack" and dancing on the "thin bluered line" (do they still grade papers with red pens these days?)
But of course you provide no answers or relevant product information, just veiled personal attacks. Don't dare question the great leader or his products! I couldn't give a rat’s ass where they get their blanks, weather its Shillen, Douglas, Shaw, Hart, Krieger, Lilja, FN, Savage, or Green Mountain. I know they produce an accurate quality rifle, but the super secret squirrel BS is annoying, the rabid fanaticism only adds to it. But don't worry, I won't be buying any rifles from Leander anytime soon, so there'll be more than enough "free" BBQ rub, hats, stickers, pens, charm bracelets, beanie babies, recipe cards, and aluminum beverage extrusions for everyone else. To the OP: Sorry your thread is now full of "Larue is the best ever", "why?" "You're ignorant" Posts. Make sure you check out all of the high quality manufactures, GAP, Larue, JP, ect. AND look at more than one forum, there are some deep seated biases on every forum, especially this one. The AR-10/ LR-308 market isn't as standardized as the AR-15 market so there are a lot of manufactures making some real improvements, like Larue's 20moa top rail, JP's side charger, SI' & CMMG's HK mag lowers. And don't be afraid to assemble your own, there are quite a few match grade components available, and assembly is simple. Had I not built my own rifle, one of the JP side-charging LRP-07's would also be HIGH on my list, and probably in 260 for the ballistic advantages over 308. Handling the demo guns and seeing how they shot at this year’s Mammoth Sniper Challenge, they definitely have improvements over the "standard" LR-308's. Specifically the side charging handle, it eliminates the space need for the charging handle to reciprocate so cheek rests/ risers can be properly sized and actually useful and not some sort of patch. The side charger also keeps the gas out of your nose when running suppressed. The low mass operating system and adjustable gas block make for a very smooth soft shooting rifle. The LRP-07 would be high on my list for long range competition, and paper punching. Hopefully this is more relavant information than random snide quotations NPT |

blah blah blah blah blah I think that your both missing the important question here: Does it really matter who the hell makes LaRue's rifled blanks? LaRue makes an AR10 style rifle that has an adjustable gas system, and has proven accuracy out of the box. They stand behind their rifles and take care of their customers from my experience and other first hand experiences I have heard. I really don't see what the big deal with knowing the manufacturing providence of each component of a rifle is. As long as the rifle shoots well and fits in the price point that I am comfortable with for what it is than I have no problem with it. Edit; KuJoe, quit feeding the LaRue trolls, and NotPolyTek quit baiting the wolves. |

Thanks guys...
There is a lot of LaRue love on several forums. - Not just this one. GAP10 is showing up quite a bit too. A few others as well. DPMS and/or CMMG is probably where I am going to end up at. - Just the price thing. I would love to spend $3,000 on a rifle. But, I am not quite there yet. I drop by CMMG a ton and pick their brains. Most likely, I will end up with one of theirs when it is all said and done. |

We need a good weather day at Bucksnort before they start gearing up for Hi-Power events. One day in March good for you Brad ? I would love to compare the diff. I'm sure the La Rue will kick ass and everything but for my own curiosity. I would like to know difference in group size - vs - price. |
|
If doing a comparison....I would shoot groups at 100 and 200yds. My CMMG doesn't seem to group great at 100yds with 175gr ammo like it does with 168gr......but today it did very well out to 850 with 175's making alot of first shot hits to 750yds.
For the price I have been happy with accuracy and I think several others were surprised by it today when everyone else shooting those distances and targets seemed to be behind bolt guns. It took a bit to walk me in, but I was able to tag the 850yd silhouette with my 16" 556 OBR too. :-) |

:-) We found the same to be true using 175s with OBR. We were struggling moa at 100 and sub-moa at 600 yards. Bucksnort is a 600 yard range. I load for distance, knowing bullet won't stabilize until 300 yard mark. Can't speak for everyone, I don't have an interest in developing a load for 100 and another for 600. I'm more inclined to zero at 300 using 178 A-Max, Then running dope at 400, 500 and 600 yards That said, will do both 168 and 178, zero at 100. Run dope out to 600 so Blitz has benefit of load and dope. Least I can do for borrowing rifle. If someone's got an Armalite or CMMG and wants to participate. OP for one would benefit. eta, how much hold with 5.56 at 850 ?? |
| The hold for the 16" 556 was borderline ignorant considering using a non mildot Trijicon Accupoint! I think it was somewhere between 35-38' in height and 6-8' in windage to the left. I took a good guestimate and got close the in the dirt with shot one, made a slight correction and hit the 4x8 piece of drywall with shot two, then started walking it in until I got a hit around shot 8-10. Used the same spot on the tree/power line intersection to send another ten rounds down range and got several hits and near misses. The splash on steel was OBVIOUSLY week in comparison to .308 and 6.5 bullets fired, so while they were easy to spot on the steel......it's blatantly obvious you aren't going to get many devistating hits at that distance with a 16" 5.56!!! |

I'm sure the La Rue will kick ass and everything but for my own curiosity. I would like to know difference in group size - vs - price. The wife simetimes works weekends, so if we can hit it right im game!! I ordered the scope but will likely be here this week. Did buy 100 rnds of cheap L and B to play with, i think 140 gr? |

I guess my grammar and spelling suffer when I'm called ignorant and stupid. I suppose I'm in real trouble now, I'm pissing off "the pack" and dancing on the "thin
