I must confess: I don't have my CCW Permit. I took the class about 4 years ago. I was in the middle of moving to a different county which the instructor wasn't sure that he was on file with. A few excuses and my typical period of procrastination later: I still don't have my CCW Permit.

For a year or so I was really into handguns. I had a P229, a P220 compact, Glock 22, S&W Model 29, Taurus PT1911 and a Taurus Model 605. I understand that this doesn't hold a candle to some of your collections, but I felt like I did pretty well for a newly married college student. After a while I decided that long guns were a lot more fun. My handgun collection has been pared back to a (heirloom) Colt New Frontier .22 revolver and a P226 that my wife bought me as a graduation present.

Recent events have led me to feel the need to carry on a regular basis. I have a family, and going "to town" isn't the leisurely affair that it was when I was growing up. I live in Pleasant Hill, but we are forced to make trips into LS and KC on a regular basis. Lee's Summit has been in the news more and more lately for all the wrong reasons. Until lately I had been OK with occasionally having a gun in my vehicle and avoiding what I considered to be "bad areas". I now realize that this is not always possible. I work in a "bad area" and the places that I had once been comfortable with like LS and the Plaza have seemingly become hotbeds for crime.

Here's my question: While I am as comfortable with my P226 as I would be with any handgun out there, I'm not sure about the size for regular carry. Should I try to find a gun that seems more concealable to me, or should I just stick with what I know? Are there methods of carry that would make the P226 seem more concealable? Am I just being paranoid? I'm 6'1" and 210+lbs, surely I should be able to hide a little ol' P226, right?

As always any help is greatly appreciated, and any mocking will be tolerated. Also, if someone could point me to a CCW class in the Jax/Cass county area I would be grateful.

I won't mock you.  Your collection is fine.  As far as carry use a gun you are second nature with.  When the shtf you don't wan to fumble with something you can't shoot well. Many of us carry larger pistols.  It's situational.  Cooler weather is coming and until you find your perfect fit jackets and sweatshirts conceal very well.

My edc is either a glock 29 or s&w 6906 iwb.  If I plan on wearing A jacket I Cary the glock 20 in a blackhawk serpa and neve think twice about it.  I have carried the 605 too - matter of fact it may have been in arrowhead a time or two or more - not any more with ankle pat down.

Be safe. Situational awareness will be your number one weapon.

I shorter and CCW a Glock17 or FNP45Tactical.....holster is more important IMO. I use a Crossbreed Supertuck and am very happy!

I carry a Glock 19 every day in a Crossbreed Supertuck. I could easily carry a larger gun. Normally this is with just a polo as cover. Hell there are a lot of times if I am going to/from work that I carry under scrubs in the same configuration. Never a second though about it.

Your going to have to get a refresher course of shorts, depending on when you took the class you may not be current with the laws (castle doctrine if before 2008(?)), and I know that your old certificate won't cover the shooting portion since the law changes... hell screw the refresher, just retake the CCW course with a good instructor and get applied.

Also, don't be like me and let your permit expire (I have my FL as a backup)

I got a Florida permit when Missouri first passed the carry law, because it was easier and cheaper for me to do it that way (and even more so now that Missouri is increasing requirements).

When weather permits, I carry a Colt Defender in a Miami Classic shoulder holster. When it starts to warm up, I put it in a belt slide, and when it's hot I carry my Ruger LCP in the belt slide.

I carry an XD45C on me for my CCW and really the size isn't as big of a problem as long as you have a good holster and belt (I use a kholster and beltman).  However I will say there are many times where I prefer something like an LCP, for example if I am going somewhere I can't carry and having to unholster/holster/etc then throwing an lcp in and out of my pocket is alot easier.

Ive been carrying a usp in a raven owb holster with my shirt untucked and over it, it prints and if you know what to look for you can see it but i dont care, its the pistol Im most comfortable and competent with and Im not going to wear a cumbersome iwb holster on account of a few peoples feelings.  Im legal and the worst they can do is ask me to leave.

I wore my FNP45 open carry on my right hip last weekend (I did have a zip up hoodie on but the bottom 3" of the holster stuck out and the front was unzipped the entire time)....didnt feel like taking it off and I was legal....wore it through WalMart, a Halloween Store, Best Buy, and then Chipotle where I dined in. Noone seemed to notice or care, and noone said a word. Leads me to further believe what Chad9mm has said before...act normal like it is supposed to be there and most people will automatically assume you are a cop or something similar. I've open carried through Bass Pro wearing slacks and a tucked in polo shirt and never had an issue either.

A good IWB holster will help avoid that cumbersome feeling and you would be surprised how well you can conceal even the biggest handguns.

If you can find your original instructor you can just shoot the range requirements again and receive a new training certificate.

If this is not possible I would recommend chad9mm. Otherwise, go on Missouricarry's website and look up the instructors for your area.

As for what gun to carry, what ever you are comfortable and competent with. If I could comfortably carry a 105mm Howitzer, I would. Imagine the face of the BG when you pulled that sucker out....

somehow the iPhone didn't make it in the picture  I conceal a fullsize M&P9 everyday, and I wear a T-shirt.  AAA Custom holster by Glk34 here online, absolutely awesome!   I'm 5'8 165lbs and had a hard time concealing anything till I tried his holsters.  I can comfortably wear that all day with out any troubles or printing.

At night (or during the day if I feel like undoing my belt) I carry my M&P9L with TLR-1 and no one is the wiser

Some countys are still honoring training certificates that where issued before the change in requirements, I know jackson was one.  Before you go to the trouble of retaking the safety class you might want to give your county a call and see if theyll still honor it.

With the right belt, holster and clothing you can conceal about anything.  I carry a FS 1911.

As noted above, you will have to refresh your credentials.

Good luck!

This may be so, but according to the letter I have read from the Missouri Attorney Generals Office, the counties that would be doing this would be in violation of the new law. So a person who's county sheriff would be issuing endorsements using the old training certificates runs the risk of voiding all permits issue accordingly. Hopefully that would not happen, but it could.

ETA: Spelling of course....

Thanks for all the replies so far. Sounds like I need to look into a good belt and a better holster.

Is there still a place down in Raymore that offers the CCW classes for $80 or so?

I carry a G19 with a Kholster and have found that the more you carry the less you know it's there.  I often fall asleep on my couch watching TV and completely forget I'm carrying.
