So the local job market is still sucking pretty bad and having problems finding full time gainful employment. I am currently just doing the farming/ranching thing. I have a now small herd of cows and 270 acres (90 owned rest leased) Wife does pretty good as a loan officer. We have no bills except utilities and insurance, house and cars are all paid off. We own some % of a few oil/gas wells in TX that brings in a couple $$$$ but not enough to live on. Apparently they do not pump from them as much as they did 5-10 years ago although they are active wells.

Anyway, I have learned that I can get yet another grant that will pay for 60% of the MO Post at MSSU. Being in LE at some level would be something I wouldn't mind doing day in and day out. There was some openings locally (city and county) recently and most people use these as stepping stones or time killers and move on to bigger departments. About every 6 months there is an opening of some sort with in my county area, if not I could drive 30-50 miles to another city, town or county.

I have not contacted the school yet to see what the prereq is for enrolling, not sure if you need some CJ classes or what. I do have an AAS in Ag business, not very helpful.

So here I am 28 years old, 2 kids and a wife jobless. trying to figure out the next step. I have pretty much worked in every line of work there is since I was 13. I will admit that I have been on the wrong side of LE a few times but nothing major. Mostly unpaid tickets and a few other non-violent crap when I was young and dumb.

Anyway, the question is...Would it be worth it to go through the school even if there was no promise of a job in the near future? At least I would be doing something, right?

There has been several openings in my area since the first of the year.

2 new deputies in my county.

1 new city leo

Carterville is hiring 1

Carl junction has 1

Joplin has 6 slots to fill

Was told that mohp is looking and will be hiring this year.

Also, it is much easier to get on as a jailer or higher end security if you are POST cert,d

Like I said though, it might be something to do to expand my horizions, just looking for opinions

My .02

You really don't want to go into Law Enforcement as a JOB! You are either drawn to it or not, if you don't feel the calling you will suffer burnout in short order.

There has always been the urge to get into it, but I have always been pulled away. When I was 17 I was all ready to go Army as an MP (92 on the asvab) when the recruiter started pushing and grooming me to go into intelligence and finally pissed me off. It came down to "no matter what your MOS is you will be moved" Me being the hot headed kid I was told him where to go.

When I had the chance to go to college for free via "job rehab" it was between Ag business and criminal justice I broke down and did what made others around me happy.

Now I have a supportive wife, roots planted and the time to do it.

Short story....Friend that is closer than any of my brothers or sisters, I've known for 22 years. Has the tendency to jump from job to job. His latest run was, Dennys fry cook, c'store manager, corrections officer for doc, county jailer, now deputy. All this in 2010. He said he never thought he would ever be in the field doing what he does but he would never change it now. It was the best career choice in his life. He spent the last week here with me before he goes to CLEAT (yes he lives in OK) Talking to him and letting my wife hear what he had to say changed her mind about the whole thing. Before it was "if you do that I will leave you" kind of thing.

I would really like to work on the county level and in the DTF (if we happen to get one back) I wouldnt mind working in the jail either.

Like you said though its not a job its a career, if its not in you then the burn out rating is high.

I am  just finishing the Academy. If you are just looking for work, try something else that pays better. Where I live you have 100+ people applying for 1-2 jobs that pay 32k.  I hope to at least find a reserve spot somewhere and work doing something else till something opens up. I say go for it if they will pay most of the school. The more college you can get the better it will help in the future.

Burn out rate is high regardless of whether its in your blood or not.

If your family isn't 110% behind your job decision, you will ultimately end up divorced or working something else and have wasted your time.

I've been an officer of some sort (deputy, police officer) since 86.  Started In Johnson County, moved to where I am today over time and experience.  I ended up waiting late in life and married a police officer.  That said, families get mad when you miss birthdays, aniversaries. etc.

Immense amount of stress for families when they hear about officers shot.  Suspicious when you work late, or complaints are filed against you.

Does your family understand what LE entails?  Ready for the sacrifice?  There's a reason why there's a huge divorce rate in LE.

Highway Patrol pays you to go through their academy. Downside is you might have to relocate. But the pay is very good. Always room to move up in rank.
