So, this AM I noticed one of my knives was open, on top of my dresser. I thought that it was odd, but knew immediately one of my kids(6 and 5) had played with it.
They were getting ready for school when I decided to "interrogate" them.

I asked them both together, and nothing was said, I knew one of them was lying, just not sure which one(although I had an idea). I finally told them "Tell me the truth, and no-one gets a spanking, keep lying you both get a spanking, make me find out the hard way, and the liar gets the spanking" I went to get the board(their choice not mine, it's a 1x2) and as I reached for it, I heard my 6 year old daughter say in the mouseiest of voices, "I'll take the blame", I said, "what?"  she said, "I don't want Lochlan to get a spanking".

Right then I knew he was lying (which I figured). She had no Idea what or where the knife was. He then spilled his guts. Needless to say, he got the whippin', but not for the knife, or for lying(at least not so much), He got a whippin' for being a shitbird, that let someone else take the fall. He got a rough lesson in accountability this AM.
On top of that, he's on his way to get his booster shot. I'd say the poor guy is off to a shitty AM.

On the upside, the fortitude of my daughter to take the whippin', was incredible. Our policy is one swat, for each year of life. She'd have taken 6 with a board, to protect her brother. True Grit...

That girl has guts, and she's got compassion.  Two things a lot of folks don't have nowadays.

Sounds to me like you are raising them right.  Good job!

I like cheese & bacon on my grits.

ETA: You should reward your daughter for her gallant deed.

She was willing to sacrifice pain for a loved one....you should be very proud. Boys have thick skulls (I know I did) and he may not fully appreciate what she was willing to do for him (I know I didnt).....maybe sit him down and tell him?

I'd say good parenting is happening in that household!

Good job, sounds like you have been raising them well. Consider how much better off we would all be if more children were raised with this level of respect for family.

It's not how big your stick is, it's how you swing it.

As a mandated reporter that works in an area the we see and have to report allot I occasionally have to remind my coworkers of this. Corporal punishment is an effective tool if implemented correctly.

Hell I would take a 1x2 over a leather belt any day.

Well, the board was my kids choice. The wife and I decided that we would never use our hands to punish the children.
We have used belts, switches, and various other "WMD's" . Out of the blue, my daughter brought in the 18" 1x2, and offered it up for punishment. It definitely gets the job done, without to much physical evidence (other than a set of welts).

They rarely get whipped, which is a good thing, and her actions today havemade me me as proud as I have ever been. I am still deciding on her reward.

She has a Marlin 915YN that she wasn't able to shoulder last year. I'm thinking about taking her out back Saturday, to let her try it again.

+1 Dad!

Lying is a big no-no in my house as well!  Everybody, kids and adults, makes mistakes and does stupid stuff at times.  I know that I have had my fair share of stupid acts in my life.  But, my motto is, "If you did it, own up to it!"  Honesty and integrity go a long way in "liability mitigation" in my book!
