I think I want an optic on my CMMG Bargain Bin M4-A3. Are there any stores in the KC area that have a good selection of Optics, from High End to relatively inexpensive?
I've never really played with optics or scopes, so I'd like to see what the differences are between preminum optics and "that cheap chinese crap," as they'd say in the Optics forum (scary place Any recommendations on optics to look at? Thanks! |

Thanks! I don't know about KC but there is lots of info here in the optics section and lots of vendors to look at here as well. I suppose the best place to look might be Cabelas but I would never buy from them. It also depends do you want a scope or a red dot. I've bought some from vendors here, the EE, and optics planet. I was pretty happy with all of them. |

Good call on both Cabelas and the Bushnell outlet.
Cabelas has a big selection. You can try out a bunch of optics and see what you like. You can likely find somewhere online to buy for less. Actually, you can get some good deals at Cabelas. You just have to play their game. I just picked up a used T/C Contender pistol with two barrels from them for $300. |

Thanks! That cheap chinese crap breaks. The expensive stuff doesn't. That's the main difference. If you're putting an optic on a Ruger 10-22 just for fun plinking, then it doesn't matter that much, get a cheap red dot from Walmart and have fun. If you intend to use your M4 as a fighting gun, then you owe it to yourself to look at more serious options. There are alot of different categories of optics and they all fulfill different roles. So the big question is, what type of shooting do you want to improve at because of the optic? If you are going to use your M4 for precision shots at long range then a red dot will not be that helpful. If you are shooting at 100 yards or less most of the time and want fast target acquisition and followup shots, then a 10x... well you get the idea. Tell us what role your AR is going to fill and what your budget for optics is, and we can start to steer you in the right direction. If you want to play with various optics then you need to go shooting with various people who have them and try them out for yourself. Looking at them online or in a store isn't the same as attaching one to a rifle, going through the process of sighting it in, and trying to hit falling steel 100 yards away. The KC crew will be a good resource for you, we have alot of different optics and will happily let you try them out if you want to meet up at a local range sometime. Speaking only for myself, both my wife and I run EOtechs and like them, if you want to try one out, send me an instant message. |

Check with Gunwurx in Gladstone if you want an eotech or aimpoint. He's got quite a few on hand. He's also got alot of AR goodies in there too. Haven't been to gunwurx yet, but are his prices market rate? Or does he have that serious storefront markup? PTk |

well like Mike said. optics come in 3 flavors. cheap crap, cheap crap that will work for light work, stuff i would take into the field (non cheap crap).
if your going go the cheap crap that works route. you have 2 choices as of right now. Primary arms and Vortex. i have a vortex and its a great red dot for 3 gun and range work. they have a no nonsense transferable warranty. the next is the primary arms aimpoint clones. get a different mount for it and your good to go. now if your talking a primary weapon that you use. you have Aimpoint, Trijicon, Eotech. the Eotech is my last chose due i have trouble that it starbrust with my astigmatism. i am planing on ordering a Tri-power since i want to try them out. in order of my taste aimpoint-all models. i prefer a comp 2 since i can get them pretty cheap Trijicon -reflex Trijicon Tri power Trijicon ACOG Eotech. just my thoughts. Like Mike and allot of others i have lost count on how much money i spent on glass and optics and sights. i still do but i learned when it breaks dont be shock. Ronald |

Thanks for all the help guys. I probably need to try out several different optics/scopes before I really know what I need. |

I still think you first need to answer the question, what kind of shooting are you doing with the rifle? Everything else flows from that. He answered in the first post! BARGAIN BIN RIFLE.... Nuff said! |
