Just finished installing.  64-bit Ultimate.  My machine is a Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Qhz with 2GB ram in dual channel mode on an ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard.  Primary hard drive is a 36GB WD Raptor, 10k rpm of course.  Video card is a older Radeon x1950 w/ 256M VRAM (no SLI).

So far I like it....I wll be upgrading to 4GB of RAM in a month or so.  I wouldn't say it's pep-ier, but it does seem smoother.  I was running Vista 32-bit Ultimate.  I didn't have any problems with it, I kept my gaming to a minimum.  Only having a 36GB main drive makes it tough to have all the software I use and some hefty games.

I would look at it as the stability and speed of XP with the upgraded looks of Vista.  UAC (user access control) is more behaved in 7.  Multitasking with VM's and RDP's is worth the upgrade by itself.  Drivers out of the box seemed to function fine.  Free float widgets *may* get used.  Porn looks great.

Any other nerds work with the RC or RTM, or full release from MSDN, yet?

I've been running the RC1 for months now. Flawless. Not one hiccup and I leave my machine nearly 24/7 operation doing FTP transfers and email/chat. Much faster and more stable than Vista was. Working on getting my student copy right now.

That's pretty much what I've heard of it.  XP speed and stability with Vista looks.  I'm running Vista Ultimate ATM and haven't had any troubles with it.  I'll probably upgrade though.  I'm running a Phenom II 720 Black Edition, MSI DKA790gx, MSI Raden R4850 with 4 gigs of 1066 and two Seagate ST3500 's(500gb).  It's pretty peppy to begin with, but we're geeks...speed is our friend and I'll take all I can get.  I am anxious to see how it performs with Modern Warfare 2.  I am thinking of picking up a couple of 120gb (or there abouts) 10k drives for my primaries running RAID 0 and the two 500's running RAID 1 for my backups.  I have 85 gigs of photos alone.  12.5mp RAW images from the Nikon D90 suck up space after you convert them all to 8bit TIF's and keep the raws as negatives.

BTW, I use several widgets and have honestly grown to like them.  I think they thought the system out pretty well.  Ebay widget, WOOT! widget, Weather Underground widget and my drive manager widget's are the ones I like the most.  What do you use?

Was that with the student discount?  Where'd you order it from?

If you have a valid .edu email call this number:
1-877-MY-MS-STORE
Press 7 to get to the preorder Windows 7 department. Hold for an hour because of the high traffic and then tell them you are a student and would like the student deal. Opt for the Professional edition on DVD retail version and then give them your address, billing info, .edu email, the works.

$37 later you have an email in your inbox saying it's on it's way. I opted for the ups ground for $5.

I'm talking about toys.  Unless its better for online gaming, I'm not upgrading from XP.

Mustangracer:  I have been running Vista Ultimate for over a year and have not had one single hicup.  Running RDP to log in remotely at work, processing 15mb RAW's and 12+mb TIF's with Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2 with no problems what so ever.  I actually prefer Vista over XP for home use.

Duke, I actually and honesty noticed a performance increase with Modern Warfare 2 under Vista Ultimate.  It was much smoother and loaded quicker.  I didn't achieve any higher frame rates, but it was a much better experience.  Just my .02.

Been running and testing 7 since the beta stages.  Running a RTM(basically a final version) now and it was a bit of an improvement over RC1.  Vista followed the pattern of ME and Win98, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.  It is much more robust, handles multi-cpu tasks much better, and beefed up the security.  Better compatibility with older software which for me was the straw on the camels back with Vista.  I am not a huge MS fan as I fix there shitty broken OS's for a living, but 7 seems to cut the mustard so far.  MS is pushing it like crack and there are some smokin deals out there to be found if you shop around.  Cheap upgrade plans too if you bought into Vista.

Duke depending on your system specs you may be better off with XP Pro SP3.  While not as bad as Vista, 7 does like copious amounts of RAM.  I do not believe they will be service packing XP anymore, and I'm sure they will officially stop supporting it with updates here soon, but XP Pro SP3 is rock solid and offers great performance even in its old age.

Only thing about XP Sp3 that I dislike is that it doesn't support DirectX 10.  Hate having graphics options that I can't activate for certain games because of my OS.  My graphics card is supposed to haul ass with DX10 features but microsoft refuses to open up XP to those features.

I guess I don't understand what all the heartburn vith Vista was..

I've never had issues with Vista...

I have a Laptop for work and two decent PCs at home... one is HP for me and one Compaq for the wife and daughter, neither were fancy just a tad from Top of the line when we bought them about a year ago...  Outdatted, as I brought it home I know....

Anyway, I keep them all updated with all the latest patches, latest version of  Kaspersky Lab antiviris, latest version of Office, a few games like Halo, Halflife, Wolfenstein, a few apps like Photoshop, Itunes, DVDprofiler, Stuff for my Garmin GPSes, maybe a few other things both are wired to a wireless router behind a cable modem...

They all seem to work well for everything we do...

Laptop gets rebooted as it goes and come from the office, my home PC only gets rebooted when installing something requires it, the wife keeps hers off and boots it when she wants to use it...

Both seem to be running really well speed/perfomance wise and neither have crashed or had any issues that I'm aware of....

So I do not see why everyone is having so much trouble with Vista...

Don't gt me wrong, I'm not a windows fanboy that things MS can do no wrong...  I'd like to see several things improved, such as

Faster Boot/Shutdown time (I know, 7s a ton faster)
Better TCP/IP stack and network throughput....  That is my biggest complaint about windows...

Every year Boardband providers are offering bigger and bigger packages and I don't think the PCs and the opperating systems are really designed to keep up...  People end up having to tweak the stacks settings and often make them worse...

I know alot of times PC techs get sent out to Broadband customers houses or business complaining of slow speeds... The techs take a new Windows laptop or one that boots from CD with Knoppix or some flavor of linux and they run the speed tests and it gets what its supposed too...  I've heard of this on about every version of Windows, and even systems running the Holy MAC OS...

Unless I see a feature in windows 7, that I just have to have,,,, I think I'll wait till I build or buy another PC to move W7...  The way it goes, they'll be onto something new by then I'm sure...

*Walter Voice* There are ways, Dude.  You don't wanna know, but I can get you DX10 on XP by 3 o'clock this afternoon.

Seriously, you can run DX10 on XP with a little bit of hacking.  Now, I will say this....DX10 on my Vista box seems to cause more problems than it's worth.  But...I do nearly all of my gaming on my 360.

(Although, Dragon Age, MechWarrior and CoDMW2 just might see me upgrading my PC.  Although..I dunno if I can stomach having to put parts totally a few 360's into said PC.  So, I'll probably just  stick with my 360.)

We've been rather challenged with Vista where I work.  We run a lot of distribution equipment that is old, 16 bit serial based stuff, and XP was enough of a challenge.  The control software itself flat out won't work with Vista.  We have begun some testing of Win7, and some of the other problems we have had under vista are supposedly fixed, by magic.  Programmers are also trying to code around the old crap so we can move forward.  Hell, one of my primary job functions is still administrating our old DEC/Alpha system, if that gives you an idea of what I get to deal with on a daily basis!  Man, I miss being on the cutting edge of technology.  Corp IT Support kind of sucks for that...
