Correction. This is an EXCELLENT read! “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf”
-George Orwell Good night...Chesty Puller...Where ever you are!

Quoted:
“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf”
-George Orwell Except he never actually said/wrote that, or any of the common variations on that. Can you prove that is not a George Orwell quote? "There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and those who have met them in battle. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion."
-Ken Jackson |

The GO quote is often a misquote it is actually "those who abjure violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf,"
Context: In his 1945 "Notes on Nationalism", Orwell did state that, for the pacifist type of a nationalist, the notion that "Those who ‘abjure’ violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf." is impossible to accept. |

I like this one.
"Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you. He is training with minimum food or water, in austere conditions, day and night. The only thing clean on him is his weapon. He doesn't worry about what workout to do––-his rucksack weighs what it weighs, and he runs until the enemy stops chasing him. The True Believer doesn't care 'how hard it is'; he knows he either wins or he dies. He doesn't go home at 1700; he is home. He knows only the 'Cause.'Now, who wants to quit?" |
