I just skimmed through the "findings" of the captioned taskforce which are now available on the dps homepage. This taskforce was convened in the wake of the VT massacre. Predictably, there was no evidence of real debate on allowing qualified students and staff to carry concealed firearms. I note that one college professor, Tristan Londre, did speak up on behalf of CCW on campus. I sent him an email thanking him for his courage and common sense.

My son is now a freshman at a Missouri public university and, just before we took him to college, he received a letter from the school indicating that they had instituted a text messaging system to notify students in the event of a campus emergency. He read the letter and said, "If they really want us to be safe, why don't they just issue us all 9mm pistols?" At least he gets it.

I believe I speek for everybody. I agree with allowing teachers to arm themselves, however i would NOT want every student to be armed. I know many many many guys in college that are only there because mommy and daddy are paying, the only thing they are there for is the partying I would think that "if" the student keeps a B+ average, passes a backround and psych and vision exam and passes a 8hr training and live fire course, then he could be considered for arming. I know far to many dumbasses at MU, NWMS, Rolla, ect to go as far to say EVERY student should be armed.

UMR's solution was to install a giant whistle on the university power plant to alert us in case of an emergency.

I see no reason why anyone who qualifies for CCW should have to disarm himself when entering a college campus.  If you can't be trusted to carry on campus, you can't be trusted anywhere.

Which is exactly why the CCW age is 23, about right where it should be.   I agree with AK, far to many dumbasses in college, mixed with a whole lot of alcohol and immaturity.

And it wasn't loud enough.  They are buying another whistle.  I work in Harris Hall which is right next door to the power plant and I never heard the whistle when they tested it.

Hey Now...

/20 year old College Student Alert/

Just put your self in my spot.

To me that sound like quite the slippery slope especially from the bottom.

While I too am a 21 year old attending a public Missouri campus, I would have to agree with the comments made about the maturity levels of some of my classmates.  I personally would feel less safe knowing some of the people that go to my school (and other UM schools) were carrying a firearm than if no one were carrying.

But even having said that, I still don’t always feel entirely safe on my campus.  UMKC is located near the Plaza and Brookside, it’s also adjacent to some not so pleasant neighborhoods.  It’s not all uncommon to get security alerts of people being mugged, robbed, cars broken into, etc.  Thankfully no one has been seriously hurt, yet…  Also, the majority of my classes are in the evening and it’s not uncommon for me to get done after 10 or 11pm,  and I do get kind of edgy walking to and through the parking garage with nothing but one “security camera” to watch my back, not to mention the drive east to get to the highway.

We do have some safety measures like cameras, big blue police telephone boxes, and a handful of campus patrol cars.  I dunno, maybe I’m just paranoid but it would be nice to be able to carry at my age and on my campus.  I’d even be willing to go through an extra set of CCW courses, live fire, more background checks, whatever it takes.

Regards,
Andrew

LOL, JBowles, you would certainly be the exception if there was one.  For every one of you, there are 1500 drunk ass frat brats wanting to impress upon a sorority girl the size of their genatalia.

For the record, I would have ZERO problem with any faculty or staff who passed CCW carrying on campus.
