The thread about the closing of the Wheel-In Drive-In in Sedalia got me thinking of a local resturant guide for our great state of Missouri. Post your favorite local (non-chain) Mom & Pop eateries. Maybe a good reference when we travel around the state. Springfield, Buckinghams Barbeque, across the street from Bass Pro, the one on N. Glenstone isn't as good. Great brisket and pulled pork, but the PIT BEANS are to die for, get a double helping! Haruno's Sushi bar, on Fremont just south of Battlefield Road Try the "Oh My God", "Jurassic Park" and the "Sex in the City" rolls, but everything is good. A great "date" restaurant. Jazz combo on the weekends. Andy's Frozen Custard, several locations around town. The "Cookie Casanova" and the Turtle Sundae. Springfield Brewing Company, off Walnut downtown Great Micro brewery, love the Beer, won't eat the food though, I helped renovate the Kitchen help me out with some more, Springfield folks Rolla, Johnny's Barbeque, easy to find, hard to give directions to. Only place to REALLY eat in Rolla. Van Buren Jolly Cone Drive-In, right off the exit, can't miss it. A tradition to eat here after a hard day of floatin' on the Current River. Gimme 4 Jolly Burgers (kinda like a sloppy joe) with relish, an order of chili cheese nachos and a jumbo Coke, the foot long chili dogs and burgers are good too. (Right next door is Big Springs Sporting Goods, small store but they carry Black Hills Blue Box pretty cheap!) The Blue Heron, nice restaurant at the Rose Cliff Lodge on the west side of the bridge. Overlooks the Current, get the catfish or trout, pretty waitresses too! So lets hear your local favorites.... Maybe get a sticky? |

Sikeston, MO Lambert's Cafe I, Located in Sikeston, Missouri, LAMBERT'S CAFE I is the oldest of the three cafes. The cafe standing right now is the third one to be located there. Each move from the original LAMBERT'S came as popularity of the cafe increased and more space was needed. The first roll was thrown in 1976 by Norman Lambert. At the original location, he would walk around and hand out the rolls.. One day it was really busy when Norman couldn't get through the crowd....one of the customers yelled to him " Throw the D*** thing!". And with that The ONLY HOME OF THROWED ROLLS ® was born. Lambert's Cafe I 2305 E. Malone Sikeston, MO 63801 Telephone: 573-471-4261 ![]() |

Kansas City: Many, many, many great barbeque restaurants. Take your choice. Gates, Oklahoma Joe's, Arthur Bryants, Rosedale's, Quicks, Wyandotte, etc, etc etc. Nuff said. Nowhere else compares for BBQ. Also Minor kudos for many good Mexican restaurants due to the large Mexican population. Mannys, Mama Tio's, Ponacks, etc. |
You know I seen the Sikeston Lambert's on my geocaching adventure last year, and said "Bah ripoff duplicate Lambert's can't be as good as the real one". I had no idea there was one other than the one in Springfield until then, now your telling me the one in Sikeston is the most original one. I'm sad I didn't eat there now. |
Only go to gates if you like verbal assault and bad service nothing like yelling at people for their order when they open the freaking door, and then taking 15 orders without completing a single one to ensure that none of them come out right. Now Oklahoma Joes is real good, along with Rosedale's, LC's, and Arthur Bryants. Rosedale's has good pork ribs that are pretty cheap, if I remember correctly. O and its a very good idea to pack some heat when visiting most of the good bbq in KC ![]() Polytech |
Some people also might be turned off by the throwing of rolls at Lamberts too. But its what they are famous for, same as Gates is famous for yelling at its customers. It's part of the atmosphere, its part of what sets them apart from someone else, and to me thats what helps make a good restaurant. And plenty of restaurants will take that many orders w/o filling one. If these things were problems for Gates, they would not have 10+ restaurants throughout the metro. |
Tacqueria Mexico (BaNo knows this one I am sure) on Southwest Boulevard... Sol Azteca also... Even Pancho's on Main... BBQ? BBQ? Lil' Jakes Eat it And Beat it!(Danny Edwards), LC's BBQ, Winslow's Smoke Stack in Martin City, not Jack Stack... the Yuppie BBQ... I too do not care for Gate's, never have and it is not due to the "Ambience" Attrocious Service and Mediocre BBQ... |
Unless they serve organ meat, its not mexican food. |
Springfield, Casper's Chili, downtown on W. Walnut(closed until after Labor Day) Mexican Villa, Ozark style Mexican fare. Try the burrito enchilada style! mmmm Buckingham Barbeque, +1 Andy's Frozen Custard, another +1 Hemmingways, @Bass Pro, for good seafood. Crosstown BBQ, on E. Division a different style than Buckingham, still very good. Cody's, great hamburgers, you better be starving if you order the big one! The Pizza House, just great home made pizza(limited hours) Joplin, Fred & Reds Chili, on Main St., great chili and it's almost like stepping back in time. Dang, I'm getting hungry, I better go!!!!!!!!!! ![]() Rick SGF, Mo. |
Didn't you ever eat at the Tacqueria? The Orange Box? It is meZZikin I assure you Sol Azteca may be Tex Mex Panchos has things on the menu that are pretty authentic too, Oh I forgot to mention! "In a Tub"..... |
WTF is "organ meat"? I assure you, no Mexicans eat "organs". My wife's parents spent most of their lives in Mexico...I'm about as expert as you can get about Mexican food without actually being Mexican And yes, most of the restaurants here aren't Mexican food, they are the American's take on Mexican food. I have never ever ever once eaten a burrito from the in law's cooking. There's not such a thing as a "chimichanga" down there. And only Americans drink Jose Cuervo, and only Americans "shoot it". Fine tequila is sipped. I'll step off my chair now Anyway...other great restaurants IMO in KC... Asian Tiger in Blue Springs for sushi...love sushi. Houston's on the Plaza...great baby back ribs, never had anything bad there. Tazo's in KC/Waldo, great atmosphere, great food (greek) J Gilbert's in Overland Park...by far the best ribeye I've ever had...best steak I've ever had as well. Skies at the Hyatt Regency...a bit expensive, but the rotating restaurant view + gourmet food is definately worth it. Still looking for an exceptional seafood restaurant this is reasonably priced and doesn't have "Paris Hilton" sized portions. |

Cabeza, sesos, legua, ojo, tripe. All organ meats or various other variety means. Try going to a mexican restaurant that serves real mexicans, they have these types of meat in taco, burritos, and tortas. And they generally don't warn the gringos what the words mean either. Panchos now with 3 convenient locations serves all these except ojo. And Taqueria Mexico is as close to mexican as you can get w/o true mexican ingredients. And for the record, Cabrito= the best tequila. Since I have yet to contribute to this thread other than comment on other peoples items. I highly recommend Grinders for both pizza(NY style), wings, and my fav the philly cheese steak made the right way with CheezWiz. Leave your politics at home tho, this place is full of hipsters and hippys. The owner Stretch is good people tho, in addition to owning Grinders, and the accompanying new crossroads music spot. He is a sculpture artist, you have probably seen his work around downtown KC. He owns a metalworking shop and art studio. He created the statue for the firefighter's family featured on the first ExtremeHomeMakeover in KC. |

There's another Manhattan Cafe at Lin Ferry and Tesson Ferry, behind the South County Library. ETA: Courtesy Diner on Hampton north of I-44 and south of I-64. It's pretty good, but not great. There's a diner in Kirkwood on Lindbergh just south of the train station, but I can't think of the name (Spencer's Diner?) that's pretty good. There's a nice little Italian place on Lindbergh at Washington/Elizabeth called Cannoli's I like to eat lunch at. They have a big menu, too. I really like St. Louis style pizza and am totally addicted Imo's, though I know some don't like it. |
Johnny's was closed the last time I checked, however the original owners were considering reopening. I'll check next Tuesday when I go down to Mtn. Grove. That was a great restaurant, for a long run. La Posada in Rolla is worth the stop, too. Does anyone know if Alex's is still open down town? Excellent pizza every Tuesday night with one of my friends with a business in Rolla. |
ndolson & BaNo, You'll have to come by one of these days for some sipping tequila. I enjoyed the good stuff while I was in Mexico and brought back a bottle and I still have not opened it. What a difference from the "to kill ya" I use to drink back when I was young. I also found one of my favorite beers when I was in Mexico...Negra Medello. I agree with you on the Mexican food, not many similarities to the US Mexican food. I could not believe that I had a couple steaks while I was in Mexico that were as good as you can find in the US. Most of the cows you see in the villages in Mexico look like something they would serve at McDonalds so I was very surprised. I enjoy the US style Mexican food though. Not much of a fan of the cheese in Mexico which really was a downer when I ordered a chili relino. |
So when is the next movies, guns, Mezzikin food and Tequila night? |
![]() I LOVE good sipping tequila. It's a severe weakness of mine. FWIW, my perfect margarita consists of 2 parts tequila, two parts Triple Sec and one part fresh lime juice. NO MIXES, EVER! Conversely, 2 parts tequila, two parts Gran Marnier for a "golden" margarita. Yeah, it don't take too many of these to put you under the table FAST! |
Hahaha...that's no joke. I attribute alot of it to being just down the street from Hallmark, with all the artsy fartsy people there. Good food for sure.
Sounds good to me! I'll bring a bottle too and we can have a sampling party |

Is Arcabasso's Pizza still open in the St. Louis area? Haven't had it in years, best pizza I have ever had! On a side note, I love Lamberts "home-style" cookin, but someone mention in another thread that they are really anti-gun, any truth to this? If so I guess I can let it slide, but only for their macaroni and tomatoes and fried 'taters, no ones perfect.... Other Springfield institutions, Ziggies Cafe, 3-4 locations, only go to the one on Campbell south of BPS. ONLY for breakfast, especially after a night at the bar, the rest of their food is mediocre at best. Harlow's Bar, Kimbrough and Cherry Typical Bar food, except for the meatloaf sandwiches, OMG!, seasonal |
Caspers's is great! Mexican Villa is great! Haruno is great food but too small and shit service! Cody's has great burgers! Pizza House is awesome! Andy's is awesome! Mijuri is great sushi and great service! St Georges BBQ is the best in Springfield! Shopping center @ Battlefield & National. Sub Shop on Seminole W of Glenstone is great for lunch! |
|
AeroE, Alex Pizza is still open. Best pizza in town, IMHO. Rolla Smokehouse is a decent BBQ place in town. It's off King's Highway. By far the best BBQ is Missouri Hick in Cuba. Take 19 south to old 66 and go east about a mile. It's on the north side of the road. It's not too far out of the way for some awesome BBQ. |
![]() I LOVE good sipping tequila. It's a severe weakness of mine. Eric, you gotta try some hussongs, it comes in a brown crock bottle, you will not be dissapointed
|
I've driven by Missouri Hick, but haven't had time to stop there. I'll probably stop at La Posada when I come back through on Tuesday evening. |

nothing like yelling at people for their order when they open the freaking door, and then taking 15 orders without completing a single one to ensure that none of them come out right.
